🏀 Illinois vs. Houston Prediction & Picks: March Madness Sweet 16 (March 26)
Last Updated: March 23, 2026 8:36 PM EDT • 4 minute read X Social Google News Link
If you are looking for an Elite Eight (or even Final Four) matchup in the Sweet 16, you've come to the right place. Two of the best teams in college basketball will square off when No. 2 seed Houston faces No. 3 Illinois at 10:05 p.m. ET (TBS) on Thursday at the Toyota Center in Houston.
Playing in their home city, the Cougars are 3.5-point favorites. But that feels like too big of a spread in a March Madness showdown that could come down to the very end. Allow me to explain in my Illinois vs. Houston prediction as part of our March Madness predictions.

🏆 Who will win Illinois vs. Houston?
See the latest March Madness odds for every team in the 2026 NCAA Tournament.
I project Houston to win by one in its Sweet 16 matchup with Illinois on Thursday. That's the same margin of difference via most college basketball projections, with KenPom forecasting a 72-71 victory and Bart Torvik calling for a 70-69 decision. Both projections favor the Cougars, but not by enough to justify the 3.5-point spread.
Score prediction: Houston 71, Illinois 70
💰 Illinois vs. Houston prediction & best bet
Illinois +3.5 (-110)
We must hope that every college basketball model is more accurate than the betting odds. We've been told that the lack of upsets will lead to better games in the second weekend, and this one could be the best matchup in the Sweet 16.
The battle of the game is Illinois' No. 2 adjusted offensive efficiency against Houston's No. 4 adjusted defensive efficiency. A big thing working in the Fighting Illini's favor is their ability to create extra chances. Their offensive rebound rate of 39.2% ranks third in the country, while Houston's defensive rebounding (30.1%) is slightly below the national average.
In a coin-flip game, I think those extra chances will make all the difference in keeping Illinois within one possession. I like backing the underdogs at +3 or better, but Caesars offers the best odds at -110 on +3.5. Most other shops are charging -115 for the same ticket, while some books have dropped this line down to +3 entirely.
🔥 Best Illinois vs. Houston player prop bet
David Mirkovic Over 7.5 rebounds (-139)
Remember when I said Illinois' offensive rebounding could be the difference in this game? Freshman forward David Mirkovic is the X-factor in that regard, as he leads the team with an offensive rebound rate of 10.4%. He also has a defensive rebound rate of 20%.
Mirkovic is averaging 7.9 rebounds per game this season. He's cleared this rebound line in 16 of his 34 games, which includes three performances of double-digit boards in his previous six outings.
More importantly, Caesars is the lone shop offering a rebound line of 7.5, with the rest of the market at 8.5. Oddly enough, this Over costs -139 in the standard rebound section, but it's priced at -154 in the alternate market.
Either way, I like this Over at 7.5 or better.
🚀 Illinois vs. Houston same-game parlay
Caesars offers the best odds for Illinois' spread and Mirkovic's rebound line. At this time, Caesars doesn't offer a first-half team total for the Fighting Illini, so I'd rather keep this as a two-leg parlay than force a third wager. I don't have an edge for the full-game total.
💵 Illinois vs. Houston SGP picks

💡 How I'm betting Illinois vs. Houston: March Madness strategy
Follow all of our college basketball analysis and expert predictions for March Madness.
If Cinderella teams are truly dead, then we better get some classics in the second weekend of March Madness. Of all the matchups, Illinois vs. Houston projects as the most likely one to be an epic showdown.
The only reason we are getting such good value on the Fighting Illini is the Cougars' home-court advantage. But I don't think their playing in the Houston Rockets' home arena should be worth quite as much to the spread.
So, give me the Fighting Illini in a game that could go either way on Thursday.
📊 Live Illinois vs. Houston odds: March Madness Sweet 16
Houston is a 3.5-point favorite after the spread started at 2.5, but I wouldn't be surprised if this line settles around -3. The total has dropped from 140.5 to 139.5.
