There's just one weekend left in the NCAA Tournament after an eye-popping Elite Eight that left fans speechless and survivor pools decimated. However, if you managed to survive and advance, you're one of the few still making Final Four survivor picks.
March Madness has lived up to its name once again, and with just four teams to choose from, while keeping in mind the need to make a pick for the national championship game, I'm breaking down the best way to attack your survivor pool for the Final Four.

| Rank | Team | Opponent |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | No. 3 Illinois | No. 2 UConn |
| 2 | No. 1 Michigan | No. 1 Arizona |
| 3 | No. 1 Arizona | No. 1 Michigan |
| 4 | No. 2 UConn | No. 3 Illinois |
🟠 Survivor pick breakdown: Illinois vs. UConn
Illinois has been playing better than any opponent UConn has faced in March Madness thus far. The Fighting Illini are No. 1 in the country in offensive efficiency (131.8), No. 3 in turnover rate (39.5%), and No. 10 in offensive rebound rate (13.2%).
But their X-factor in March has been their defense, which has jumped up to No. 11 in efficiency since the start of the NCAA Tournament.
With the tallest team in the country, Brad Underwood's squad poses a tough matchup for a UConn offense that's been underwhelming.
✅ Survivor pick: Illinois
📈 Illinois is hot at the right time
While UConn is the most successful program of the decade and managed to pull off an impossible comeback against Duke, Illinois is at another level right now.
The Fighting Illini have the best NBA prospect left in the tournament (Keaton Wagler), an eight-man rotation that has an average height of 6-foot-7 that features four players between 6-foot-9 and 7-foot-2, and six different players averaging over one made 3-pointer per game.
The size and depth of Underwood's team is why my Illinois vs. UConn prediction projects a four-point win for the Illini.
〽️ Survivor pick breakdown: Michigan vs. Arizona
Unlike the first matchup in the Final Four, there's no clear better team on paper between these two No. 1 seeds. With that said, I do lean Michigan due to a combo of efficient shooting on offense and dominance on defense - the Wolverines are No. 1 in defensive efficiency (89.2).
The difference in this matchup is that Michigan is more willing to shoot threes (Arizona is No. 363 in 3-point rate) and the Wolverines are No. 6 in effective field-goal percentage (58.8%) thanks to their physically imposing frontcourt.
The Wolverines also have the size to match Arizona, something the Wildcats haven't dealt with much. And that length has helped Michigan rank No. 1 nationally in effective field-goal percentage allowed (44.9%).
✅ Survivor pick: Michigan
🏆️ A clash of titans
These are the two best teams in the country, and this Final Four matchup will have the feel of a national championship game.
Michigan and Arizona are No. 1 and No. 2 in net rating, the only teams that rank in the top five in both offensive and defensive efficiency, and both have won all four of their NCAA Tournament games by double digits.
My Michigan vs. Arizona prediction has the Wolverines winning by just one point, which is why it might be better off saving the winner of this one to use as your survivor pick in the championship.
🏀 Strategic survivor pathing: Why the early game is the better play
All season long, Michigan, Arizona, and Duke had been a notch above every other program in the country. With Duke out due to its choke job against the Huskies, the Wolverines' showdown with the Wildcats almost acts like the real championship game.
While it's hard to gauge which team is better between the two, with every advanced metric ranking them as the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the country, it does set up well for the winner to be your survivor pick for the championship.
Obviously, UConn's jaw-dropping Elite Eight win has the Huskies looking primed to shock the world and win another championship, but everything points to Illinois being the better team. And even if you think UConn will win, that should be your survivor pick.
Michigan vs. Arizona is such a toss-up, and the winner will likely be at least a 3.5-point betting favorite in the championship game. So, the play is to pick your survivor from the first Final Four game, and take the winner of the second game in the championship.
