Lakers -7.5 (-105) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The Lakers are 4-2 against the spread as a home favorite this season. The Spurs, meanwhile, have failed to cover in back-to-back games as the reality of Victor Wembanyama's injury begins to set in.
The Lakers covered as 2-point home underdogs - without LeBron James - in a 118-116 win over the Spurs on Nov. 5. The main reason San Antonio kept it close was that Keldon Johnson and Jeremy Sochan combined for 28 points on 10-for-11 shooting off the bench. Don’t expect that to happen again today.
Luka Doncic 10+ assists (+127) ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Back to the Nov. 5 meeting: The Lakers struggled somewhat offensively with Wembanyama on the floor.
But what happened when he went to the bench? Luka Doncic was throwing nonstop lobs to Deandre Ayton (22 points) and Jaxson Hayes (nine points). With Wembanyama sidelined today, why would I assume the Lakers aren’t going to go back to what originally worked against the Spurs (Doncic recording 13 assists while attacking the paint)?
(Note: This is also a good spot to take Ayton’s and Hayes’ Overs on points; they were just too correlated with Lakers -7.5 to include in this SGP.)
Luka Doncic Under 33.5 points (-123) ⭐⭐⭐
And for the final leg, we take a bet that DraftKings views as negatively correlated to our first two picks.
While the Lakers exceeding expectations with Doncic recording 10-plus assists would usually mean he’s also scoring a lot, this number is a bit too high. He was lined at 31.5 in Sunday’s win over the Philadelphia 76ers, and he finished with just 31 points in that outing. The Lakers’ path to covering the spread today depends on Doncic attacking San Antonio as a distributor, not as a shooter.
Meanwhile, our senior analyst Dustin Saracini breaks down why he’s betting Doncic to go Over 32.5 points in his Spurs vs. Lakers player props.
