With the Pistons on the wrong end of a back-to-back but Cade Cunningham trending in the right direction, I’m predicting the Pistons will win and cover the spread (+2.5) against the Grizzlies.

The Pistons are probably underpriced in this spot due to the uncertainty around Cunningham, who was upgraded to questionable before last night’s game and is trending in the right direction for tonight. If he sits, don’t buy the Pistons late, but if you can get them before the official word comes out - or at any number better than a pick ’em - do so.

Cunningham and Isaiah Stewart should return tonight, reducing the significance of Detroit's playing last night. The Pistons have already been consistently underpriced in these spots this season, going 8-3-2 against the spread without rest. Memphis is 5-11 against the spread with a rest advantage.

The logic here comes down to efficiency. Since the All-Star break, Detroit is eighth in net rating (+6.8) while Memphis is 20th (-1.3). Detroit clears Memphis in both offensive rating (117.6 to 115.9) and defensive rating (110.7 to 117.2).

As a result, I predict the Pistons will beat the Grizzlies by a final score of 119 to 116.

If Cunningham plays tonight, he’ll have to cook from beyond the arc. For all its flaws, Memphis' defense ranks third in points allowed in the paint per game since the All-Star break. However, they also rank 30th in above-the-break 3-pointers allowed per game with 11.7.

Cunningham takes a lot of his shots near the rim, averaging 12.7 field goal attempts per game from the paint since the break. But against this Memphis defense, I expect him to pull up a bit more often.

With Cunningham already averaging 1.9 above-the-break 3-pointers per game since the break on 5.1 attempts, an increase in volume from deep should push him well over 1.5 made 3-pointers. Lock in the over for the generous price of -115 at DraftKings.

If Cunningham sits, consider buying some Malik Beasley overs. Those markets were unavailable as of publication.

Just as Cunningham stands to benefit, at least as a long-distance shooter, against the Memphis defense, Thompson stands to lose out. Like Cunningham, Thompson takes most of his shots at or near the rim, averaging 8.1 field goal attempts per game in the paint since the break. But unlike Cunningham, he doesn’t do much else. He averages only 0.5 field goal attempts from other zones.

Thompson is averaging only 10.9 points per contest since the break on shooting splits of 52/23/69. With his points prop for tonight’s trading at 12.5 currently, it makes a ton of sense to buy the under, especially while Cunningham’s status remains uncertain.

If Cunningham doesn’t play, I’m fine with an Under 13.5 for Thompson. He is averaging only 11 points per game without Cunningham this year and 13.2 without him since the break.

While I believe in this Detroit defense, it’s worth recognizing that over the last 15 games, it has surrendered the most points per game to opposing point guards at 29.9. On the year, the Pistons rank only 11th in points allowed per game to the position with 24.9.

A large part of that issue stems from their fast pace. Even if the Pistons play efficient defense, the extra possessions lead to a chance for opposing point guards to have higher-scoring nights despite inefficient shooting.

Morant, Memphis’ star point guard, has been on one since the All-Star break. He is averaging 27.5 points per game on splits of 47/28/86. Those aren’t the most efficient numbers, but with his shot attempts increasing to 20.8 after the break from 17.2 before it, he’ll take the shots necessary to go over this number.
