Soto is beginning to awaken from his July slumber, a month in which he bottomed out with a putrid .210 batting average and .760 OPS. Early in August those areas have risen to .259 and .836, respectively, but the slugger is still slumping relative to the blasting off we saw earlier this season, when he hit many of his 27 home runs. That includes 11 in June.

He can promptly return to that form, and nothing mends a scuffling masher quite like a pitcher who's doing plenty of his own sputtering along. Soto gets that opportunity today against the Milwaukee Brewers' Tobias Myers.

He's not enjoying nearly the success of his first MLB season last year, with a rising ERA from 3.00 over 25 starts to 4.30 now. Part of that is simply allowing more contact, as his K/9 is down from 8.3 to 7.4. It's frequently been loud contact too, with a hard-hit rate that's spiked from 38.7% to 44.2%.

What's most inviting for Soto though is that through eight appearances and five starts this season Myers has been overwhelmingly reliant on his four-seamer while throwing it 51% of the time. Soto annihilates heat and has posted a .630 slugging percentage against that pitch, with a 71.9% hard-hit rate.
