The Michigan Wolverines handled their business against the East Carolina Pirates in Week 1. They secured a convincing 27-point victory and limited the Pirates to only one field goal, even though they couldn't cover their lopsided 36-point spread.
This week the Wolverines take on the Rebels, a team that defeated the Bryant Bulldogs of the FCS 44-14 in Week 1. While the Rebels struggled to throw the ball in that game, they did run for 283 yards and five touchdowns. The Wolverines make it a yearly tradition to beat up on inferior nonconference opponents. Last season, they outscored their opponents 166-17 in their three nonconference games, winning each by at least 46 points. After the Rebels' offensive performance in Week 1, there's no reason to think they're going to score against this defense this week.
The Rebels have no passing attack. They didn’t need one against the Bulldogs, but when they did go to the air, the results were horrible. Starting quarterback Doug Brumfield was just 11-for-18 for 86 yards and one interception, while backup Jayden Maiava was 4-6 for 40 yards.
The Wolverines allowed just 235 offensive yards to the Pirates in Week 1 and only 103 of those were on the ground. The Rebels need to adapt to a stout defense this week, but there's no reason to believe they can. So, why not just take the Wolverines to cover the Under?
First, the Wolverines may not even score 37 points in this game. Even if they shut out the Rebels, they still may not cover the gigantic spread set before them. Second, there's always the chance the Wolverines win this matchup 59-0. They won by that exact score against the Uconn Huskies last season. Avoid any bets that require you to figure out what the Wolverines' offense will do, and just trust their defense to obliterate this team.
