College football Week 4 top picks

Drew Allar Over 192.5 passing yards (-115 via BetMGM) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Iowa’s defense might prove to be Drew Allar’s toughest test yet, but we aren’t going to overthink this one. Our Heisman dark horse is projected to clear 200 passing yards by a comfortable margin, giving us a solid edge on this low total at BetMGM. Allar has thrown for at least 200 yards in each of his first three games as Penn State’s first-year starting quarterback, a trend that should continue with Saturday's “White Out” game at Beaver Stadium.

Florida -27.5 (-122 via FanDuel) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I’m not entirely bought in on Florida’s turnaround, but I’m certainly backing Billy Napier’s side at home this week against a woeful Charlotte team. The Gators can pick their preference when it comes to attacking this porous Charlotte defense. Georgia State chose the aerial path last week, dousing the 49ers for 466 passing yards. But Trevor Etienne might be looking at a career day against a defense that ranks 95th in FBS in run defense, having allowed Maryland to rack up 287 rushing yards in Week 2. Charlotte’s offense ranks 119th in adjusted offensive efficiency and 129th in FBS in third-down conversion rate. The Gator defense just stifled Josh Heupel’s offense, so I’m expecting that unit to absolutely smother Charlotte under the lights in The Swamp.

Penn State -14.5 (-108 via DraftKings) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

This Big Ten rivalry game has the second-biggest spread of any of the six ranked vs. ranked matchups this week, and we still don't feel the Nittany Lions are laying enough points. Iowa is trying to be more explosive on offense by having Cade McNamara push the ball down the field more than the offense has in recent years, but he has struggled with a 53.5% completion percentage. He also will not have his best-receiving option, tight end Luke Lachey (the only Hawkeyes player with more than eight catches and 81 yards receiving), who is out for the rest of the season due to a right leg injury. Running back Kaleb Johnson, the team’s leading rusher from last season, is also dealing with a high ankle sprain.

For our money, there is no better atmosphere in college football than the "White Out" game in Happy Valley, and a Nittany Lions defense that ranks fourth in the country in Havoc will make life miserable for a banged-up Hawkeyes offense. Penn State has covered the spread in 10 consecutive games.

Michigan -24 (-108 via DraftKings) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights have been a really good story so far this season. They’re 3-0 and two of their three wins have come over Power Five teams. They’re outsourcing their opponents 95-30, and they’re allowing just 272.7 yards per game.

Yet, all of that can go out the window this week against the Michigan Wolverines. They’re going to the Big House to face a team that has outscored their opponents 96-16 without their head coach.

If the Scarlet Knights were off to their usual start, this spread would be more than four touchdowns. But because their offense has looked really good behind quarterback Gavin Wimsatt and running back Kyle Monangai, and the defense has not made their usual mistakes, they’re receiving way more credit than they deserve. The Wolverines will score 30 or more for the fourth consecutive game, and the Scarlet Knights may not reach double-digits.
