🌪️ Iowa State -3.5 (-106) ⭐⭐⭐⭐
After entering last week ranked No. 14 in the nation, Iowa State got pantsed by Cincinnati, getting into a huge hole early and never really coming back. The Cyclones had enough fight to close it to one score late, but it didn’t end up mattering. But with 465 yards to Cincinnati’s 478, three turnovers on downs, and one missed field goal, I’m not as worried about Iowa State as the AP voters who dropped it to No. 22 seem to be.
Iowa State now heads to Colorado, favored in a second straight road contest. After opening at 4.5, the Cyclones are down to just a 3.5-point betting favorite, and with that number priced at -110 (52.4% implied probability) on DraftKings - enough to profit $9.09 on a $10 bet - I’m pulling the trigger. The books are giving too much credit to a shaky Colorado team with two home losses already this year.
This pick largely comes down to one key trend. Since Matt Campbell arrived at Iowa State in 2016, the Cyclones have been a jaw-dropping 29-15-1 against the spread following a loss. Of all FBS teams since 2016, only Alabama (8-3) has covered at a higher clip following a loss. Led by veteran quarterback Rocco Becht, the Cyclones should get up and respond to the adversity of Week 6 by beating up on a Colorado team that just blew a two-score lead against TCU.
To be fair, the Cyclones have some significant injuries, especially in the secondary and at kicker. But despite those, they still almost rallied against a very solid Cincinnati team. Unless kicker Kyle Konrardy comes back, look for the Cyclones to be aggressive on fourth down again - something that should work against a Colorado defense that ranks 93rd in opponent fourth-down conversion rate (64.3%).

💡 Iowa State vs. Colorado odds analysis
The spread for Iowa State vs. Colorado opened at 4.5 but has ticked down slightly to 3.5. The injuries on Iowa State’s side of the ball, compounded with its recent loss to Cincinnati, likely have the market skeptical of the Cyclones. I doubt the injury news can get any worse for Iowa State, so don’t be surprised if the spread ticks back to 4.5 or so. Iowa State probably won’t get under 3.5, so if you see a 3 anywhere, be prepared to pounce.
The total is a similar story. After opening at 51.5, it has ticked up to 52.5, crossing the key number of 52. I see marginal value on the Over up to the key number of 55, largely due to the injuries across the Iowa State and Colorado defenses. Both sides have solid quarterbacks who should be able to generate a few explosives against shaky defenders. Don’t be surprised if we approach 54 or 55 by the time this game kicks off.
