ATP DOUBLES PLAY: GULBIS-TURSUNOV +100
At first glance, I looked at this pairing against experienced doubles players Santiago Gonzalez & Travis Rettenmaier and thought - damn you gotta go with the experience. Upon closer look though, I like Gulbis & Tursunov. This isn't their first pairing together as they teamed up twice in 2009, winning the Indianapolis doubles title and going 1-1 at this same L.A. tournament last year. What is interesting is that in their Indy title run, they beat Rettenmaier and a different partner. Gonzalez & Rettenmaier have had a solid season doubles-wise, but most of their damage has come on clay. On hard surfaces in 2010, this pairing is 0-1, losing in Atlanta last week in pretty straight forward fashion. Looking back to 2009, this pair did have success at a hard court Challenger, but otherwise does seem better suited to clay. While Gulbis & Tursunov don't often play doubles, this pairing's brief history and the surface should give them an opportunity. Tursunov has also won four doubles titles in the past three years interestingly enough. Gulbis should be using this as additional practice time on-court for singles, while Tursunov should be hoping any play will help his return to fitness as he lost in qualifying here to Devvarman.
