Bet overall winner, or accumulated win bets on all matches?
    Hi all,

I've come to the forums to see if anyone has any thoughts on a question I have.

I'm thinking mainly referring to tennis when considering this question but it can relate to any knockout tournament based sporting event.

    QUESTION:
Is it better to wager on a player to be the overall winner at the start of an event
    OR
To accumulate win bets on the same player across each game they play?

My guess would be that it probably equates to be the same or possibly the bet every game option is better? Not sure why but it just seems like it should? It would however save a lot more time just betting the overall winner at the beginning of an event.

Would really appreciate anyone's thoughts on the matter.

    Thanks,
    Harry.

Extremely situational. There is no definitive answer.

Overall winner market would be based on a players toughest possible draw. Upsets happen. Therefore if you are right you'd be better off with the overall winner market in most cases rather than rolling over IMO. Rolling over makes it easier to exit the bet if circumstances change e.g. niggling injury.

Well I feel silly now. I'm accumulatively betting each match on the current 3 ATP events for the following players:
        - Fognini in Vina Del Mar
        - Haas in Zagreb
        - Gasquet in Montpellier

I should have bet them as the overall winners instead.

I don't know how much they were paying at the start of the tournament, to compare.

Is the historical odds data for overall winner available anywhere?

          Fognini market @ 4.5.
          Gasquet market @ 3.75

Unsure about Haas but quite a lot, at least @ 15 market.

At the moment its looking pretty close between the quotes for overall winner markets and the accumulative match betting. Hopefully all 3 get up and win so I can make a comparison.

Hardcoar, I dont think your quote was accurate for Haas in Zagreb as he is top seed.

For anyone that may have been interested in this thread (probably no one), it does look like betting on the overall market does pay a better dividend (slightly) than betting each match individually.

Cheers and thanks for the responses.

An update on this, which may well put this issue into the category of "This isn't a worthy issue at all".

I have noticed there are hardly any bookies willing to put up a market for outright winner. And the liquidity on Betfair is fairly small. They're more interested in keeping liabilities on a tight rein with match betting only.

Like many issues the difficulty is actually finding a market or bookie willing to put up a competitive market or any market at all.

So therefore I recommend betting each game individually rather than betting on the outright winner pre-tournament. As you'll actually be able to get on.

                    Case closed.
