Betting as an American in Canada and Europe?
    Hello everyone,

The startup company I worked for just closed. I have done very well with my picks for NFL in the past - so am flirting with the idea of couchsurfing in Europe or Canada this fall with the purpose of legally betting on NFL games. Soaking in a new world along the way definitely wouldn't hurt as well.

I understand that there's a handful of online sportsbooks that still accept American money, but I'm a little paranoid after being burned in the past (when one that had my money shut down and never returned my money). For this reason, I prefer to bet in person whenever possible.

Okay, to the point of this post....

I'm not sure about Canada but I understand that there's a few European countries that allow sports betting. But can an American just show up at a sportsbook and make a bet? Or would he be refused because his home country happens to be very vigilant about this particular activity? I wouldn't think so but I'd like to make sure - would be shitty if I went all the trouble flying over there only to find I was refused service. I'd have a lovely adventure but I'm focused on making money right now - am sure you guys would understand.

Which European nations (and provinces in Canada if applicable) are most friendly toward sports betting and Americans/foreigners who go to their sportsbooks?

I realize I could simply google for some answers, but I'd love to hear directly from Americans who have experience of going overseas or North to make money at sportsbooks. Also, would be good to hear from natives who have insight in this matter as well.

    Thank you.

P.S. Oh yeah, there's always Vegas, yes. But frankly, legal sportsbooks aside, it isn't my kind of place. I'd like to avoid it if possible.

I'm an American, residing in another country, and I have had zero issues with being able to bet anywhere.

Maybe I should read the whole post before I comment, sorry.

Yeah, thought so. Thanks. A few additional questions, if you don't mind.

          - Where do you live now?
          - What are the sportsbooks over there like - as compared to ones in Vegas?
          - Are your winnings taxed? If so, how much?

Shops in the UK high street are a cash-based business. They don't care who you are or where you have come from so long as you are over 18 years old. No tax to be paid out on winnings any more - any personal liability in another tax jurisdiction is your own affair. NFL is a tiny part of their business, so the shop limits on particular bets might not be that great though. Still in London you can find streets with 10 different bookies within a quarter of a mile.

Very cool. Are those places also called sportsbooks over there? Just so I'd know what search terms to use.<style id="_clearly_component__css" type="text/css">#next_pages_container ** width: 5px; hight: 5px; position: absolute; top: -100px; left: -100px; z-index: 2147483647 !important; ** </style>
