#71Montana has a sort of strange sports "lottery" where you pick players like a fantasy football team, and the top 3 winners of the "lottery" all get a piece of the pot. Their "sports betting" is even worse than what Delaware has.Comment -

#72I don't know how, but I have to figure Las Vegas is not going to like this. It could seriously impact tourism and travel out there. Who's going to get on a flight and get a hotel when you can drive to a race track or casino locally and legally? I have to feel like the lobbyists for the Vegas casino's will go "all in" to try and thwart this. I love it though, good for Christie and I hope he nails this.Comment -

#73Anybody who thinks they are going to walk in the (AC) Borgata and see a Las Vegas style sportsbook is sorely mistaken. The FEDS are a beast. The NFL is a multibillion behemoth. THEY BOTH DO NOT WANT SPORTS BETTING AND NEVER WILL. The NFL pays million on lawyers that have connections all the way up the food chain. Does that mean it will never happen? No, it doesn't. But, it won't happen this way, that's for sure. Nobody FUKS with the US Government. In any way, shape or form. NOBODY. Not even the Chinese. Believe it or not, the US Goverment has more advanced weapons than even them. You think they will let NJ bitch slap them. NO WAY. IMPOSSIBLE.Comment -

#75I couldnt disagree more, first of all the US govt already allows sports gambling in Nevada and the gambling industry has all the politicians in their pocket and over 70% of NJ voters support it. If it was allowed in Atlantic City it would hardly make much of a difference to the country as a whole, I mean that's still no access to sports gambling for 99% of the country outside of tourists and ppl living in Vegas and AC...I mean if you really think you can make a living at sports gambling just move to Vegas and bet all you want.Originally posted by Coming Back!Anybody who thinks they are going to walk in the (AC) Borgata and see a Las Vegas style sportsbook is sorely mistaken. NOW if you mean the online gaming that NJ talks about then yes you're right that is a long way off as that is basically legalizing gambling in every state in the country which has huge legal ramifications but yea in a couple years NJ casinos will look like Vegas sportsbooks which means nothing to the 99% of us that dont live in either.Comment -

#76Well, Vegas may suffer but I think only very little. I mean, Vegas draws in billions of dollars annually and I bet only the tiniest fraction of that money comes from people who go out there for the sole reason of betting on sports.
Don't get me wrong, obviously a lot of sports betting takes place out there. But I doubt that a significant percentage of the people that go do so based on sportsbooks. A trip to Vegas is still a trip to Vegas.Comment -

#77Yes the NFL is a multibillion dollar behemoth, but so are the casinos. The federal government will do what they decide to do, and in an election year it may not be wise to go after casinos on this matter. I saw an interesting analogy to smoking pot. Smoking pot is against federal law, and yet some states permit it. The feds haven't exactly dropped the hammer on those people.Comment -

#82Came across this today.Originally posted by Coming Back!Ask Delaware about the FEDS. They are one of the four states permitted, that were supposed to be permitted to gamble. And they are stuck with embarassing 3 team parlays.
Even if Governor Chris Christie thinks a 1992 federal law can be defeated in court, New Jersey belongs to the Third Judicial Circuit. And Delaware belongs to the Third Judicial Circuit. And Delaware tried to embark on single-game sports wagering in 2009. And the NFL and other sports leagues sued Delaware. And a federal judge in Delaware agreed with the NFL and other sports leagues.
And the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit affirmed the decision.
The fact that Delaware and New Jersey are in the same judicial circuit means that this case most likely is over before it even begins. The issue is settled; the federal law prohibiting sports gambling beyond any programs that states had in place between 1976 and 1990 has been upheld by the same appeals court to which any case against New Jersey would eventually go. (An appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court could change the outcome, but the Supreme Court refused to hear the Delaware case.)

#85Delaware already had their parlay lotto in action when the federal ban took effect and it was ruled that without overturning the ban that they could only offer what they originally offered. New Jersey voters voted nearly 70% in favor of legalized vegas style sports betting. The Delaware and NJ cases will be two completely different cases.Originally posted by Coming Back!I rest my case. It's all a bunch of rhetoric and nonsense. Done deal
NJ will plan to go ahead with this and the NFL will call to have it stopped before the season starts but with the change in the DOJ stance on the wire act we have witnessed a flood of states moving to legalize online betting, the demand is there and more states like California have interest.
The government realizes they can't stop sports betting it is only a matter of time before they use it as a way to help dig us out of the massive deficit that Obama has dug us into. Nj will likely not have sports betting this year but they will have it soon and as online gaming popularity increases and the government see's the revenue they can gain from it I would expect to see online sports betting across the US within the next 3-5 years.Comment -

#87If sports betting is allowed in other states Vegas might fall. There will be people with money from Vegas betting to have this idea shut down. #88Florida already offers big casinos and prostitution, are u saying the sportsbooks are what keep Vegas appealing....uh no. Vegas is Vegas bc it offers a special overall atmosphere, it is Sin City and 10x the size of AC, the sportsbooks down there look dead, almost no one other than whales bypass local bookies and online sportsbooks to fly to Vegas unless they live within a couple hundred miles.Originally posted by probettor1If sports betting is allowed in other states Vegas might fall. #90Don't be silly. Las Vegas is still going to be Las Vegas. As another poster in here wrote, about 95% of people that go to Vegas don't give a crap about sports betting, but they still go anyway. (Actually, I'd personally bet the number is higher than 95%). And there are plenty of people like me: Someone who cares a great deal about sports betting but, even though I have a sportsbook in my own home thanks to the internet, I still get out to Vegas at least once a year.Originally posted by probettor1If sports betting is allowed in other states Vegas might fall. #91I'm happy I was wrong. In fact I was more worried about my statement that certain. It is all about money and if no one is investing money vs this idea he might have a chance. And yes we have prostitution in FL but not legally as in vegas. But I know that a legal prostute in Vegas is out of the reach of 99% of the people. They are way too expensive.Originally posted by BriGuyDon't be silly. Las Vegas is still going to be Las Vegas. #92Talking about local bookies, I love betting the unders and the favorites. There is no way I can bet with a local bookie. They just know I'll go for the under and they give me a lousy line once they know my betting predictions.Comment
