I got a peek into the new Venetian sportsbook...
... it looks like it's a couple of weeks away from opening. The layout looks identical to the book Cantor opened at the Hard Rock, only larger. I didn't see any room for freestanding chairs like in the old V book... which is too bad because the chairs were a fairly large non-smoking area. The new noodle bar has been expanded in size and now takes up some of the old book space, the book knocked out the north wall to compensate, but it seems far more isolated from the rest of the casino than the old book did.

Not sure if anyone cares, but the book is open now. I was there this morning. It looks exactly like the book at the Hard Rock. The employee I spoke with was surly. The sheets were late getting put out. I'll miss the old book.

I've seen others say this, but not being vegas or having any connection to brick and mortar I am curious too.
From what I've read their technology is way ahead of the other sportsbooks out there. I know they run a few different books out there, are they quick to drop the axe?

The problem with Cantor isn't that they're a bad operation. The problem with them is that they're cannibalizing all the independent books. There are only 3 independent books left on the strip, one of which sucks (TI) and one of which is the Stratosphere. While in total Cantor is/was probably better than the old Venetian/Palazzo book, the old V book offered things that the Cantor books didn't/don't (large non-smoking section, very generous drink-ticket policy, free showings of Pacquiao PPVs, original props, occasionally highly opinionated lines) and if you didn't like what the V had to offer, it was easy enough to find one of the Cantor clones.

Also, Cantor's monopolizing is already hurting the customers. As they've grown they've become ultra stingy with drinks. Back when there was more competition, they would have had a harder time getting away with that.

Pretty sure I would rank your unnamed indie shop last by far of those 3.

Speaking for myself, people running books that understand the difference between a good bet and a bad bet are bad. Homogeneity in the market is very bad. Those two combined are evil.

I suppose one could make a case Cantor may be net positive for the average fish. I have no idea what that argument might entail, but it's possible.

Nice weather around the corner, come visit Tamarindo sometime, Bill.
