Past Posts & Line Errors Thoughts
    Conscience ?

Had something come up today that made me think long and hard about this topic.

First what happened, one of the books I use left an ATP match up well into the 2nd set and the dog, +150, took the opening set, so I took a shot on him and he eventually took the match. Before I go any further, the bet was later cancelled, which is okay by me because it should not have been on the board when I made the play. In the past I have learned my lesson about reporting bad lines, games still on the board that shouldn't be, etc. through 5dimes who won't even give you a thank you, let alone a FP or some type of incentive for reporting it (when in reality you are preventing them from possibly taking a big hit). In the past I would never attempt anything of the sort but 5dimes taught me that this is a cut-throat business and if you see a chance you must take it. In addition, its not my job to be on the lookout for bad lines, past posts, etc. they have employees that handle this type of stuff. However I thought about this a lot today because I did this to a book I really like and have been nothing but nice to me. However the bet was not cancelled until after the match was completed so in reality we both took a shot at each other, with me initiating it and them holding the upper hand by letting the match unfold before making the final decision (which they have all the right to do so).

Conclusion: Its not worth it in the end because as mentioned above, the book can wait to see how the event/match/game unfolds before cancelling the wager so even though the player may feel he/she has the advantage, in the end the player is at a huge disadvantage. In addition, if you want to build a good business relationship, its probably best to report these types of errors.

    Your thoughts?

Your 2nd paragraph is spot on. You don't want books to take shots at you, so don't take shots at them.

The reason that books now are not interested on player reporting line errors is that those errors were used to be liabilities, but now are free-rolls. So yeah, don't ever think about betting on these. It should be a FAQ or sticky topic on this site.

Smart thing to do is to not take shots at obvious line errors.

It sucks because Vegas would likely accept wagers that many online books would cancel but what people fail to realize is that online books take in a much larger volume of action than Vegas casinos and because of technology they can take that action much faster than vegas.

          Imagine this scenario:

Say online books were forced to accept wagers on erroneous lines. Say a book mistakenly hangs a bet at +2000 when it is supposed to be +200, anybody who has used a computer realizes how easily this error can occur. Now if all players knew that the book would have to accept any action that came in on this error you would have many large syndicates of players who worked together hunting for bad lines and when a 2-1 bet came out as 20-1 suddenly the book gets hit by 50 max wagers within 5 minutes. Clearly 5 minutes is hardly enough time for a linesman to react this flooding of action that would take an hour or two in Vegas.

It is unfair if a book is taking a shot at a naive player but I do understand why online books need to be able to void these erroneous lines and I would suspect that 95% of the players who take shots at these lines are fully aware that it is a bad line and know that they are taking a shot at the book so they should expect to be fired back at.

Even the squarest players around should be shopping for lines. Don't take shots at bad lines, don't bet lines on games that have already started if you can not accept this and you do not want to play fair you always have the option to not play offshore but if you play by the rules you will likely not have any problems.

Treat books as you would expect them to treat you, i.e. fairly

I never take bad lines. If I have the time I will report them. A couple of times I've received a free bet for my trouble.

Sometimes a book settles a wager incorrectly in your favour. I also believe in telling them about that unless I've previously been unfairly treated by them.

The other big problem with doing this at a book you like is that they are likely to be more inclined to close your account, either now or if you start beating them in the future.

Agreed you will never get paid? I saw one the other night on live in play on five dimes and new if I played they would cancel it or I would never get paid on it, I just moved on and played what I liked. Remember they always win in the end, well most of the time.

I used to look for past postings on MMA before it was mainstream. It seems that the ways they handled it was from one extreme to another. I was booted from some, scolded by others, and even had my wager refunded and they apologized to me by another. One offered me a reward for letting them know and I received a $25 free play on 3 occassions.
