It has emerged that discussions around adopting the Confederations of African Football (CAF) calender - which runs from January to December - are hotting up.
It has been mooted that the change will take place in 2013 - after CAF announced that it will hold the Africa Cup of Nations tournament in odd years from 2013.
Having the tournament in even years means that it takes place in the same year as the World Cup, something that has not helped African countries at the global showpiece.
The move to change the calendar has been hastened after a South African club this week failed to reach the group stages of a CAF tournament for the third successive year.
Supersport United lost 1-0 to FUS De Rabat in the second leg of the CAF Confederations Cup in Rabat on Sunday.
To change the calendar, the league must come up with a resolution as to why it should be done. The next step would be to make a recommendation to the competition committee and then to the PSL executive, which will submit the resolution to the board of governors.
Contrary to popular belief that it would be a logistical nightmare to change the calender, PSL CEO Kjetil Siem said that while it would present a challenge, it was achievable .
"We can make an arrangement just like we did during the World Cup year. We can have a year-and-a-half season with normal league fixtures from August to May. From May to November we can use the opportunity to play cup knockout competitions.
"Our sponsors have shown that they can be flexible, especially with proper consultation and deliberation. Everyone came to the party last season and we cut the season in half to accommodate Bafana Bafana.
Added Siem: "My opinion is that the current African Champions League model is not working for South African sides because of the huge size of the continent. The players are too tired by the time they play their match because of the travelling. The model was adopted from the European model and it is easier to travel around Europe than in Africa. The whole concept must be considered."
A PSL insider revealed that one of the reasons for SA clubs being uninterested is that they know they are going to be cheated, given a raw deal and appalling accommodation and poor facilities.
"Costs can also rocket to close to R500 000. So, they would rather perform badly and focus on SA competitions where the stakes are high. Some of our clubs have even been banned for opting out of these competitions."
The calender was synchronised with the European version in the mid-90s during the country versus club wars that seriously affected Bafana Bafana. A lot of SA players had just signed new contracts with overseas clubs and there were problems whenever they were called up for national duty.
"Now PSL players are dominating the national team. Bafana Bafana used to rely on players who played abroad, but the league has improved tremendously and is producing better players compared with 15 years ago. So, the change can work for everyone involved. But I do not make the decision, only the league can only make such a big decision," added Siem.
Meanwhile, Siem's three-year contract has been extended.
