A thread for the Dutch league. I always follow Ajax, but decided to take a closer look at some of the other teams this season. Watched Heerenveen - PSV today, which was a very entertaining game. I figure this league is somewhat lesser known than the big European leagues in England, Spain, Italy, and Germany, so there may be value here. The two main factors I use for soccer are team concept and use of space, so it will take me a little while to become familiar enough with the teams to start picking my spots.

The season has just kicked off. So right now this is just a reminder to myself. I saw other threads dedicated to one foreign league, and thought it was a good idea.

As to Ajax. They're opening the season tomorrow at Groningen. Not sure yet if I will bet the game. If I do, it will be on Ajax not to win. They looked extremely vulnerable on defense in the midweek game at Paok in Greece, and will be without the player that saved them there, the striker -and 'WC goalie'- Luis Suarez, who was red-carded -again- in a pointless preseason game, and is out for the first two matches of the season. His replacement will probably be brandnew acquisition El Hamdaoui in his very first game for Ajax. Ajax is missing two key midfielders (Lindgren and Enoh) due to injury, as well as central defender Vertonghen who is suspended. WC finalist Van Der Wiel has looked very tired in the back, and along with Anita on the other flank, this may be the shakiest defense Ajax has fielded in a long time. Groningen is sure to smell the blood in the water.

I'm staying away, but it may work out for Ajax. Out of necessity, they're forced to play a lot of youth players in this game, which is actually their tradition. So we may see a very rejuvenated Ajax, and youth players trying to grab their chance. That would be the good news. The bad news is lack of experience. Hard to cap a first game of the season, especially with this kind of lineup. Good luck.

AZ much better value, they will compete for the title this season and although they have sold some good players they have brought in decent replacements and got a good solid coach

Ajax gave away a late two goal lead, just as earlier in the week in Greece, and ended up with a 2-2 draw. Terrible defending in final 20 minutes for two games in a row now. Possibly a lack of fitness. New strker El Hamdaoui had given Ajax a 2-0 lead. Great start for him.

Indeed, Ruiz was/is their most important player. I think there's a chance of him staying with Twente, because of Preud'homme.

Rumour has already been firmly denied by both Abramovich and NEC (not that that's saying much these days).

NEC isn't the kind of club he could turn into a contender easily, they hardly generate any income themselves and they would have to pay massive off-market salaries to attrack some good players. Dutch regulations are too strict to be paying big salaries without backing it with steady income to do this in the long run.

If the rumour turned out to be true I'd think it would be more likely he'd use NEC to give youngsters and foreign players unable to get a work permit in England the chance to gain experience at a higher level.

Pretty big development in the Eredivisie. Vitesse was bought. On paper by Jordania from Georgia. But behind the scenes, according to the rumors, by Abramovich. Vitesse will get a major financial injection, and very likely Chelsea will park a number of second string players there (first string anywhere else).

The balance of power in Holland could be shifting. Plus other clubs could follow. PSV is Philips-owned, so they would never sell out. But Ajax could return to the European top with that kind of money. For now it's only Vitesse.

Dunno what to think about this movement for Vitesse. It's hard to believe Vitesse will be playing for champs within 3 years, that's what Jordania wants. Today I read some stuff about some 17 year old Georgiens joining Vitesse :s, for sure that won't bring the quality that they need and certainly not the kind of players that will bring them a title. And those youngsters go back to chelski or barca when they are getting better.

I'm a huge Ajax fan myself and for the clubsake I don't hope that such a person takes over the club. Ajax are great for bringing talent from their on youth academy, not spending 100M on transfers. But that's just my opinion...

Yeah, but Ajax has turned into a selling club, because they can't keep up with the big money. They could keep their youth talent a lot longer if they could pay them more.

Ofcourse the new owner is going to tell the fans what they want to hear and not that they want to turn it into a Chelsea daycare center, but I'm almost certain that's what's going to happen.

PSV isn't Philips-owned and hasn't been for a very long time. The Board of Directors has been Philips dominated for decades, but even that changed at the beginning of this season. Right now they're pretty much nothing more than a sponsor and even that has been brought to question this year.

Philips was the founder of PSV, hence the name Philips Sport Vereniging. It started out as a factory team for Philips employees, but later on they became the PSV that we know (and love )
