I have a question about a movie quote
Hi, I'm a Japanese and have no experience on sports betting.

And now, I'm watching a movie called "Lay the Favorite" and
it has a scene a female bookie who is making lines saying
"146, 152, 155 total. Other scores are coming in,
so let's lower the total to 7.5 minus 15. No no, Minus 13.
No, leave it just at 7.5 flat."

I think I get what the "total" is.
It's a type of betting, right?
But I have no idea about "minus 15" or "minus 13" part.
Would somebody tell me what it means?

This may be a dumb question, but I really want to know.
    Thank you.

    -15 is the point spread

Let's say the New England Patriots are playing the St. Louis Rams and the Patriots are favored by -15. That means they have to win by more than 15 points for you to win the bet. Or you could take the St. Lous Rams +15.

If you take the Patriots -15 and the final score is

    Patriots 45
    Rams 6

    You win the bet.

If you bet Rams +15 and the final score is :

    Patriots 20
    Rams 14

    Then you win the bet

        Thank you.

Thank you very much for replying.

So, what she is saying is basically "let's lower the line of the total to 7.5 and the point spread to minus 15"?
And, "no, let's make the point spread to minus 13" and then "no, just change the total only to 7.5 and leave the point spread as it is."

        Is this what it is?
I'm sorry but this is very confusing to me.

It's a movie starred by Bruce Willis etc.
You can see some of info at the site below.
But it seems that the movie isn't out in the US yet.

I've never seen the movie so I can't really understand what you're saying but the spread for a game can not be -15 and the total 7.5.

Read this and see if it answers any more questions

I haven't seen the movie but which sport are they talking about.

And now, I'm watching a movie called "Lay the Favorite" and
it has a scene a female bookie who is making lines saying

No, leave it just at 7.5 flat."

It sounds there could be 2 different possibilities
first if baseball the 146,152,155 could be moneyline odds
where they are reading odds of what other books have
                  and then totals..pause
7.5 minus 15 meaning -115 on the over under then they
think about adjusting it but keep it flat meaning -110

second maybe college basketball just because of the
                  totals line
"146, 152, 155 total" but when they keep
saying total 7.5 minus 15 throws that off

so I would stick with the baseball
