Question for you gear heads out there
I'm not an auto mechanic, I'm an I/T guy.

    Question?

    2005 Chevy Trail Blazer EXT
    Back brakes, pad and rotors.
Including the labor, what should I pay out the door?
Meineke says gave me a 425 dollar estimate, seems a little high.

That might be a tad high but around that price seems right.

yeah that seems high. i just asked one of my co-workers who has a 2004 trailblazer and the mechanic (one of our insured) did hers for $180 out the door. now granted that was just turning the rotors, not new ones.

find a local mom and pop shop. those big box stores will rip you. and you are helping out the little guy too.......as long as they have a good reputation. usually googling will warrant some sorta results for locals.

Not that high for a shop.

Could do it yourself for $150ish most likely.

Depends on if you need new rotors, or just need them turned which usually are 15 per rotor around here.

Took me about 4 hours to completely do my brakes (1st time). It's worth my time to do them.

Being an IT guy, guessing you don't know where to begin with doing them, but try looking on craigslist or some place that isn't a shop, and just a out of work mechanic to do them...He'll probably charge 100 to do them and probably 100 in parts.

That's the best way to go. Car places always try and rape you...You gotta know someone who can do this stuff, and it's nothing major so any mechanic should have no problem, and you'd have nothing to worry about.

if you don't know how to change your oil by yourself, don't attempt to do the brakes by yourself. you might end up ******* up something and you might die.

Do you even read my posts?
I said I can change oil, I can rotate my own tires, I can do basic, brakes aren't basic.
I have never attempted to do my own brakes, don't intend to, it's not my thing.

                                All good.
I could get a manual, figure it out just fine, do the job if push comes to shove, but push will not come to shove.

I do a lot of barter work, I know electricians that need computers for their business, that know nothing more than how to turn it on, I configure their business computers for their own needs, you know, quid pro quo thing.

                                Peace

Like I said...Look at craigslist they have a "services" section that has automotive repair.

In my area, there are 3 things posted today that have guys that will come to you and do your brakes.

                                  Probably right around 200 bucks.

Depends if you like paying extra for advertising and franchise fees. $425 isn't too bad if they use quality parts
                                    and have a guarantee.

Just got back from the shop, they are going to use certified parts, 75K mile guarantee, they have done quality work for me 3 years ago on a different matter, and I chewed them down to 375 dollars out the door.
Brake job had to be done, done deal.

                                      Thanks for the input all.
