no, vegas strip is no longer run by the mob. may still have involvement drugs, prostitution, loan sharking etc. like they do to some extent everywhere. but casinos themselves or supplying casinos, no
sort of 3 stages in vegas,
1) hotels mob-owned and financed. big skim operations were rampant... was skim just to beat tax man? i guess rip off union pension funds too. see jimmy hoffa.... also supplied alot of the supplies casinos required (linen service, beverages, human resources etc.).
2) mobs sold hotels to respectable front-men (some knew very well of the mob infiltration, some not) and people like howard hughes. howard hughes had no idea what was going on. probably so rich and senile he didn't care enough... still a very active skim
3) big modern corporations and high yield junk bond financings took over...... run very professionally. no more skim operations....
not sure how much influence gaming commission and/or government leaders (like RFK and kefauver) had in driving out mobsters. probably alot.. and of course, RFK and kefauver were probably long out of the picture when they got driven out of town but they had a huge influence on public perception.
