Kate Smith’s 'God Bless America' out at Yankee Stadium over racist songs

The New York Yankees have decided to no longer run Kate Smith’s version of “God Bless America” during their seventh-inning stretch because of Smith’s affiliation with songs that carried racist lyrics.


Most famously, Smith sang a 1931 song, “That’s Why Darkies Were Born,” which opened: “Someone had to pick the cotton, Someone had to pick the corn, Someone had to slave and be able to sing, That’s why darkies were born.”


The song, which has been called a satirical take on racism, was a big hit for Smith, and also was recorded by Paul Robeson.

VeggieDog--unfortunately, that time is very close. On a side note--I just finished watching a TV series on Netflix called "Turn". It is about the spy network that George Washington set up during the Revolutionary War, but I enjoyed it immensely because the entire series treated General Washington with the deference and respect that that man deserves. It's a little out of the norm these days.

Also, this commercial plays non-stop during children's shows and on MTV. But yeah, Kate Smith's "God Bless America" is offensive.....

Instead of exposing our children to history and even a culture of the time so that they might learn and not repeat it we expose them to the language and imagery of those halftime songs.

I hear them sometimes when getting the local feed for the NBA games. At halftime, they stay in the arena instead of cut to a TV halftime show.

Even with the danger looming of some people revering some of that past and idolizing the statue, at least a conversation and some education can be had.
