For the first time in history, hip-hop has surpassed rock to become #1 genre

For the first time in history, Rap has surpassed rock to become the biggest music genre in the US with no signs whatsoever of slowing down, according to the end-of-year report published by Nielsen Music.

R&B/hip hop represented 24.5 per cent of all music consumption in the US - the largest share and the first time it had led the measurement for a calendar year. Rock came in second place, with a share of 20.8 per cent.
Eight out of 10 of the most listened to artists of the year fell into the R&B/hip hop category, as did seven out of 10 of the top albums.

While Ed Sheeran still ruled with his third album Divide - shifting a whopping 2,764,000 album equivalent units - albums by Kendrick, Drake, Bruno Mars, Post Malone, Migos, The Weeknd and Khalid also made the list.

    Rap or hip-hop?

    Not exactly the same thing.

Rap can be a type or part of hop-hop.

                      its great news!!!

hip hop means alot to so many different types of groups

lots of suburban youth/young adults like to run, lift, get hyped for sports, study, and listen to while walking to their classes on college campuses. Lots of older folk like to to listen to while they work out or have a good beat to listen to while commuting to their job, traveling on planes to out of country vacations, lots of milfs have good cardio classes that utilize the sick beats as well.

lots of urban youth enjoy the lyrics and emulating and aspiring to out of reach lifestyles that many of the artist's portray as they kill time throughout the days after dropping out of high school, standing on corners. there are songs that speak to many urban developmental moments. The time leading up to crimes, the times when a homie is shot in front of you, the times you get arrested and have to serve time, the times you have to avoid the nagging of your 3 baby mommas asking you to give some $ for "pampers", the times for cheating on your girl and sexually assaulting young girls.

very valuable way for corporations to keep urbanites buying the things they don't "need" to buy, but the 1% wants them to buy.

excellent tool to keep them in their place

It's about time considering that rock has been dead for decades.

Rap, is the most popular music genre and the only one with an occupational hazard.

hip hop means alot to so many different types of groups

lots of suburban youth/young adults like to run, lift, get hyped for sports, study, and listen to while walking to their classes on college campuses.

Youth have no individuality anymore they just follow the status quo.

i think hip hop passed rock a long time ago...... is ed sheeran rock?....... i'm thinking the definition of rock is pretty liberal these days. not exactly iron maiden/judas priest.

do people even like the music? or do they just think it's cool and "other people" like it?

i seriously question whether 20 year olds who like hip hop will listen to it in 30 years like 50 year olds listen to old music today. or at least they still like the music they liked 30 years ago (even if they don't listen to it or anything else that much)

you know, i barely knew who ed sheeran is/was. basically a name to me and i knew he sold out our local 20k arena for a concert last year.

but by most of the 2017 sales figures, he had 4 of the top 6 songs for the year. 4 of the top 8 songs by the other measures........ why doesn't this kid get more media?....... i'm a huge MJ fan but no way he had 4 of the top 6 songs in a year. i would assume same thing for beatles, elvis, bee gees etc.

It's not complex musical talent in rap today, you may get a creative beat, but I think the old school rappers had far more real musical talent then the rap kids today..

In other words - You can operate a basic music studio off a computer program these days.. Yet you won't learn the true real sound of real instruments being played live.. Most rappers don't and won't ever learn how to play a real musical instrument either, no keyboard or piano, guitar, bass and drums... It's like they bypass all that stuff today...

I go to the Hollywood bowl and listen to a live orchestra play behind a legendary singer and I typically find that to be real musical talent being played...
