New law limits toilet flushes, showers in California

A new law passed in California will soon limit the number of gallons of water a person is allowed to use per day.
By 2022, residents in California will be limited to 55 gallons per person, per day. In 2023, the number of gallons used is expected to fall to 50.

    (More at the link.)

Hey, you Californians, who the heck are you sending to Sacramento?

If you get billed for the water... what does it really matter how much you're using? I don't get it.

Central control vs free market: they choose the former.

I can’t imagine how they plan to enforce this. The reality is they probably didn’t even consider the implemenation and just figured pass it now to look like they’re doing something and let someone else worry about it a few years down the road. The dumbest part is that domestic household use actually accounts for a very small percentage of total water supply usage. There is much bigger fish to fry when it comes to water usage.

Don't you get a water bill every month? They know exactly how much water you're using.

If you're using more water than they think you should, you will have to prove how many people live in your house. If you say Dad, Mom and three kids, they'll check your tax returns to see who you have listed. They'll make you provide birth certificates for everybody you say is living in your house. They'll check the school rolls to see if you really have the kids you listed. They'll do "home visits" to verify your info.

The government has a million ways to check up on you.

I used to work in the insurance industry and it amazed me the amount of information we were able to gather on our customers to verify the information they gave us.

What about when I have family visiting for the week? Do I need to apply for a special dispensation? It’s idiotic to try to restrict on a per person basis. Better off just restricting it per household regardless of how many people and jack up the price on over usage. You can get the same effect without the goverment having to pry so much.

You could get a dehumidifier which should be good for an extra 5 flushes a day

the irs (which everyone seems to be scared to death of) cannot even audit 1% of the returns they deem suspicious. so now the water dept. is going to check on everyone using water (that's everyone) and verify their usage ratio. it would take years to just to do once. how many people would they have to hire to do this.

                      I was thinking this too

Can't see them being able to do this in a cost efficient effective manner

other techniques californians intend to employ to cut down on the number of flushes:

Exactly. I am all for conservation of water, but creating another goverment bureuacracy with thousands of employees is not the best solution.

The LADWP cannot even resolve their billing issues from years ago when they switched systems. One of the utilities up north blew up a fukkin neighborhood. The utilization rates that LADWP bills you on are based on usage during a specific period of the year so you can actually game the system. They send the meter readers by, but that's a joke. My meter was broken and no one noticed for a year and a half.

You have to understand that legislators make laws here just to put their name on shit and say "Hey look at me I saved water and the homeless" blah blah blah. Half this shit is totally unenforceable.

I started reading the bills and it essentially pertains to urban water retailers. So the individual water districts who buy the water from the wholesaler will then need to establish baselines for populations served and water usage for a ten year period. They are the ones who need to enact water conservation policies on their customers which just likely means that your bill will go up if you hit a certain tier of usage. The water police are not doing bed checks. These bills actually amend the water plan that is already in place. It's not nearly as draconian as the articles make it out to be. By way of comparison, our family of 4 uses an average of 232 gallons per day of water.
