Ham radio on the other hand is still a very popular hobby. Amateur radio operators are required to pass a written test, demonstrate knowledge of electronics, broadcasting laws, morse code, etc. Test administered by FCC proctors and the license is not easy to get.
Get back to me when you pass the amateur radio operators test and can discuss the topic intelligently.Comment -

#9You use it because unlike the internet or cell phones it can't be shut down by outside forces. Ham radio is indispensable during times of emergency and they always are there to lend a helping hand.Comment -

#14Emergency communications. Hams are among the unsung heroes of hurricanes, earthquakes, fires and floods. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, many cell sites were flooded or lost prime power, and landlines, where available, often were overloaded. Even the 911 system was unable to handle the unusual number of urgent calls. Amateur operators were involved in many rescues, providing the only communications link to rescuers.
In one case, floodwaters in New Orleans stranded 15 people on the roof of a house. Unable to get through on the overloaded 911 system, one of the stranded called a relative in Baton Rouge who called another relative who called the American Red Cross. The local Red Cross chapter operates its own amateur radio station and Ben Joplin, WB5VST, was able to relay a request through two other amateur stations in Oregon and Utah back to Louisiana (presumably via HF ionospheric scatter). Local emergency personnel were alerted and all 15 people were rescued.

#17Very inexpensive. You can pick up very good used equipment on eBay.
Actually if you just want to learn more about the hobby and have fun without spending much money you can start out on a hand held 2 meter transceiver which can be bought for less than $100 used. http://www.ebay.com/sch/Ham-Amateur-...+radio+2+meter If there is a repeater near you your signal can reach hundreds if not thousands of miles.
Very cool hobby with even cooler people in it who are always willing to help newbies (they are called "Elmers").Comment -

the various nets that are active. My favorite is called the Liberty Net which meets every Saturday night at 9:00 p.m. on the 75 meter band. A very politically incorrect group of guys, intelligent and very well informed on current events.
I think you would enjoy their banter so check them out. You can even listen to them online at http://3950.net/2015/12/liberty-net-november-28-2015/ They also have a chat session going on the website when the net is live but I don't participate.
I'll check out the movie when time permits thanks.
Hope all is well with you and know that prayers are sent your way.Comment -

#33I'm not a ham, but being a ham operator is a just and noble hobby that actually helps society in times of need.
Let us know how you do if you take the test.
