Calling people by their last name

One of my coworkers called me by my last name only during our Skype conversation. He said:

"Hey $last_name. How are you?"

It's not. It's just how people do things now. Your last name is more personal and defined than your first is anyway.

Throughout High School I didn't even know the first names of a few of my friends. Sinse we all played sports, our coaches never used our first names, so we didn't either.

Same here...I played baseball and basketball in high school, but other sports as well, we all went by last names. I'm 37 yr old now and people still know me as my last name. Nothing disrespectful about it
