I have been ambivalent about Trump as a person mostly. But this strikes me as Machiavellian level evil to be trying to convince 'the people' it may not be worth saving every life we can if it costs too much, instead of constantly re-assuring business and people the govt will do everything it can to save us all.

I think he said it (the "return in 15 days") thing because the non sycophants he has remaining in his orbit have told him that there is a significant possibility that a scenario of "worse than the great depression" is very realistic and upbeat talk by the man at the (theoretical) controls, might slow the crash further.

This initial stimulus is going to look minuscule in a year.

I think for the last month or so, Trump's felt like one of his major bullets was his ability to rally markets and people. Had the stimulus been signed today, the markets (or at least overnight) would have had a nice spike (still might, but with the unemployment claims going to the moon, you can only bake in a guess)

So talk of people returning in 15 days, an inevitable signing of the stimulus bailout, and hopefully some other good news, could see some gains.

I don't wish for a bad market or economy. I might point out the hypocrisy of Trump only claiming the "up" days, but there was already concern that the economy had red flags on it before Covid.

The price of oil (which has basically decimated the US industry) and the tension between Saudi and Russia would be enough to spook markets and trigger a recession.
