I'm calling BS on this story. The old lady intentionally mucking a bad beat hand is a poker urban legend. I've heard it told as happening in multiple different ways in multiple locales since well before 2006 when the story was written.

The author here is almost certainly just repeating the urban legend for the sake of getting paid to write an article.

I think this is fiction. And she isn't very smart. She doesn't know this guy and she just escalated the fight. He could be some psycho who will follow her home.
