What's a solid one to purchase for the living room (brand and model number if known)? Thanks for your input.

I too am in the Samsung camp. I went to all the big stores and in each one the Samsung seemed to couple the best picture with noticably wider viewing angles. Here's the one I bought, and I do recommend Best Buy's wide selection, just not their extended warranties.
90% of the guys dont give a shit about your problems..and the other 10 are glad you have them..

Samsung is pretty over priced, IMO. I got a 42" insignia from best buy and am thrilled with it... Was about 1K flat and the Samsung was about 1.3K.
Good thing? the HD looks exactly the same on both tvs... My roommate has the Samsung. However, if you are just watching normal tv the Samsung looks a touch better.

I have 52 inch Sony XBR4 LCD. I shopped extensively, in high definition nothing comes close to it, including the samsungs.

I'm in the Panasonic camp for plasmas. When I was shopping a little over a year ago, the Panasonics had a much sharper picture and handled motion much much better than any other brand I looked at. Look at vanns.com for a good selection.

If you are on a budget, maybe Panasonic or Samsung 50" lower-end plasmas. I have a Panasonic TH-50PX80U and I love it, and it's inexpensive. Samsung PN50A450 is supposed to be good to. No point in going for a 1920x1080 set if you have seating positions greater than 8 feet or so for a 50" TV.
If you have a bright room though and can't control the light, you might want to stick to LCD.

Like almost everything you buy it depends on how much you want to spend....
As far as brands I would say most of them are comparable but IMO the top ones are Sony, Samsung, Pioneer, and Toshiba.... The rest are second tear...
There are elite series by most of the above brands which usually have more updated technology but are not for the average consumer...
Also the most important thing I can tell you when you go to the retail stores is take a DVD player with you... Plug it into the TV you want to check out because they have a lot of TV's on their show floor and it's all coming from one signal which is split up many times... This will lose a lot of quality in the signal which results in the loss of quality... It will make most of them look the same...
