What I do would probably be overkill for a lot of people but . . .

I record everything in detail on an Excel spreadsheet which I have developed over the years. For bets, I have about 12 columns for all the variables I have found to be important. Apart from the obvious data you have mentioned (team, odds, dollars, sportsbook), I have a columns for the type of bet (I have about 8 different categories of bets), rotation number (can be handy during ncaaf and ncaab), start time.

I have a column just for comments. Usually that's where I remind myself what I am cheering for. I place a lot of bets every day and sometimes with arbs/scalps/middles, it's hard to remember all the little angles. A quick summary is not totally necessary but it makes the evening more fun when the scores are rolling in.

Then I have different pages in the same file for accounting info and various research tracking. I start a new file every year.

It is a very critical file for me and I e-mail copies to a couple of different places every Monday in case there is some kind of computer disaster.

Ditto on Mudcat's answer. Excel works fine for me as far as keeping records/stats on just about everything I want.

Santo, I checked out that wagerstation doohickey, but could not find a cost on the services/software without registering and logging in. You happen to know how much that runs?

A old fashion accounting ledger, pencil, and a calulator works the best for my needs. Mostly I play poker and bet college hoops and football. Maybe the gamblers that play all year need the fancy stuff to keep track.

El Guapo, I would say note down any factors you used in deciding to place the bet, plus any factors you have in mind to test to possibly use in the future.

For example, if you’re making bets against basketball teams in the third game of a three game or longer road trip, record this game in such a way that it’s clear it fits into that category. If you’re betting a football underdog at +13 because you handicapped the game and concluded that the spread should have been about 10, then include that number 10 somewhere in your records for that game as your projection.

Or maybe you are curious if you should be betting earlier or later to get better lines. In that case, write down the date and time of your bet, the odds of your bet, the start date and time of the game, and the opening and closing odds.

Or maybe you aren’t currently using the weather in your handicapping, but you are wondering if you should because you have the sense that you’ve done better in dome games and maybe something about the weather is screwing with your results. So note for each game you bet whether it was dome or non-dome, and perhaps the weather factors (precipitation?, wind speed?) that you think might be relevant.

Basically you want to keep good records not just to know if you’re winning or losing, but as evidence for why you might be winning or losing, and as a guide to how to bet going forward.

Also, you’ll be a lot better off keeping records on your computer with Excel or something like that rather than by hand. The idea is to use these records, so the more easily you can manipulate them, calculate with them, isolate some parts from others, etc., the better.

Good ansers thank you. I am afraid more of my computer crashing than my note book gettign burn in fire so some thing else. I do not make alot of bets so it is easy to keep my record in a note book. Do any one keep list of the open lines of a game or just the odds when you make the bet? I will begin to write in some of the wether information now because that sound like good information to remeber.

                  Thank you,
                  Paul
