Went to the dog track tonight. I've lived 3 minutes from the track my whole life, and the wife and I went and bet the dogs for the first time tonight. Really enjoyed it.

Anyone know of any good books on racing? It's piqued my interest. Thanks men.

Yeah, I'm guessing there aren't good books on it.

My recollection is that it was very random. Skinny dogs bouncing around, getting bumped out. God bless u, if u identify an edge on this.
Where's the fuckin power box, Carol?

The key to doing well at the dog track is driving an older buick, suffering from severe depression, and smoking through a hole in your neck. I figure this must be why 80% of the gamblers there fit that profile.

the individual dogs have distinct tendencies if you have the time and patience to track it you can spot some good plays

Its a numbers game..certain combos seem better than other
1-5-6-8 are great dog numbers, I guess the way they come out of the shoot

we used to have a huge greyhound track out here, but no one went to it and it had to shut down.

but now they are talking about turing that spot into a reg. casino, so it might all be for the best.

dog racing is pretty much confined to the south (fla. ak. ala) now that peta has stepped in and shut down the northeast tracks on cruelty to animals agenda. the win pool handles have dwindled so there are no options for betting there unless you are strictly a 2.00 a race bettor. this drives you into the multiple wagering pools which can easily cause you not to cash a ticket. bettor off boxing your 3 favorite numbers between 1-8 in an exacta or quinella (ugh) or trifecta if you dare.

sorry jj but 5 and 6 are terrible numbers

if there is a gap between the 4 and 5 in the cage then there is slightly more value to the 4 and 5 (depends on the track)

otherwise 1, 2, and 8 are always the best numbers to bet, and the order is 1 best position, then 8 then 2

here's a breakdown of what i learned - i went to a dog track at least once a week for 15 years before they closed here. dogs are very beatable, even at 20% house take.

                      1) in a grade d race or worse, go with early speed and post position (1, 2, 8). these dogs tend to lack control and have a bigger tendency to bump each other all over the place
                      2) grade c races - go with grade acceptability. lot of dogs dropping from a and b down to c, lot of dogs moving up. see which dogs have performed well in c races.
                      3) grade b races - i always liked big closers in these races and it seemed like #8 dogs if they were closers could take a much longer path and still get it done
                      4) grade a races - class class class. go with the class in grade a races, best of the best

if the track has a tv screen or tote board that shows how much money is bet on different dogs to place and show, you could find extreme value in this. for example at geneva lakes here they would show this, and right before the race in a $300 or so show/place pool you might find a dog that only has $4 bet on it. this might happen 1 out of every 20 races, but when you find it that $2 show ticket can easily pay $15-20 and ANY dog has a 1-10 chance of showing.

Thank you gentlemen. I live near a nice casino with a dog track that's somewhat well known in the dog racing world....probably because they're all dying off. I would think there could be a TON of edges....if you put a lot of work in.

                        Thanks for e info.

you could have the best dog in the country for 2 years and still would be lucky to break even on it

WVgamb........Mike is right on the money here. My ex-father-in law raised them and did quite well. I was around them for about 12 years, lot a work. Kept about a 100 dogs in various stages, pups in training, to ready to go for maiden races, to 10-12 brood bitches. Ran his dogs mostly in Florida and a few went to Alabama. Had his own training track on thirty acres east of Dallas. The man was a Saint when it came to raising them, never any cruelty or funny stuff going on. Would always bring his dogs home from the track, when they were done racing, and found homes for them as pets. It's a dying sport, we had three tracks in Texas and I think they are all closed now. Was always fun to bet on them, I felt like it was pure luck to cash a ticket. The intriguing part is, there is no human element involved during the race, just balls out to get the finish line.

                                  Good Luck and enjoy.

They make great pets, very docile, even around kids. I never ever heard a growl being around that many at a time.
We trained them on live jack rabbits, and all they wanted was to stop the squealing, and never ate a rabbit. They take one bite at the back of the neck and that was it. They eat good, like a horse. About 5 pounds a day and two cups of whole milk. He mixed their food in concrete mixer and fed each individually. It was quite an operation.
Get yourself one, they're great animals.

I had a great time. May head to the track every now and then just to be alone, listen to some tunes and enjoy some action. It's pretty cheap, if you don't go overboard. Can get steep though, if you allow it.

It's piqued my interest. Thanks men.
Made living for 16 yrs 70/80/early 90's. Had 3 bookies ask me to never come back. It's paramutual i.e. you can manipulate the odds in today's small handles. Game can no longer be beaten because what you bet on track alters the odds at to great a %, can't bet offsite (i.e. not altering the odds) because you can kill them. Also the quality of handling\care has diminished greatly. You're 20 years to late. Great time while it lasted.
