(CNET) American citizens can be ordered to decrypt their PGP-scrambled hard drives for police to peruse for incriminating files, a federal judge in Colorado ruled today in what could become a precedent-setting case.

Judge Robert Blackburn ordered a Peyton, Colo. woman to decrypt the hard drive of a Toshiba laptop computer no later than February 21 -- or face the consequences, presumably including contempt of court.

I believe this woman is being investigated for some kind of banking fraud (forget about the billion$ stolen by MF Global)

However , if she was being investigated for any connection to terrorism and refused to decrypt she could be detained indefinitely under NDAA and her Constitutional Rights waved/discarded

I wasnt aware you could just decrypt a hard drive. The encryption we have at work, can't be undone. Without completing formatting/erasing the contents

This is not surprising at all, the authorities would still need a search warrant to force this. If you refused the court would order you to unlock your computer or you would sit in jail until you decided to preform the court order.

Think of it this way. You lock your door and bar up your windows. The police have a search warrant, however your house is so fortified that they cannot enter it without destroying what is inside. Do you think a court would allow you to keep your house locked forever?
