Is this seriously still a debate. By DEFINITION, an upset is defined as an underdog winning straight up. Period. There are no other criteria.

In gambling world it is an upset because the betting public determined that the Saints were better, by 3.5 points, even on the road than San Fran it the game they last played. Under those conditions in the Boolean underdog theory somewhere in the magic kingdom this constitutes an upset, under those criterion.

They win by 4 points after the Saints turn the ball over 6 times. That's what we call "luck". They were correctly chosen as the underdogs in that game.
