As for MLK day if you say it to everyone then what are white people going to do? Most will more than likely think youre being a smart ass or trying to embarrass them. If you say it to black people many would try and make it a racial thing, only 'safe' interaction is if a black person says it to another black person.

He was a great guy and did a lot. But holidays that are based on (non religious figures) famous people should just be recognized and not really overtly pushed. I dont ever remember hearing 'happy washingtons birthday' ,that has even been homogenized with Lincoln and just called 'presidents day' these days.

But really other than New years, Valentines day, st patricks day, 4th of July, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, most holidays are just a day off for people or a day that has enough people recognize it to try and make it special. I dont see anyone really celebrating Arbor Day, Hell, even Pearl Harbor day (not really a holiday but probably should be) is no big deal. Even 9/11 a day that should most definitely be remembered is barely acknowledged other than this past year which was the 10 year anniversary most people just gloss over it.

So no you cant really wish someone happy MLK day because theyll just think youre being a smart ass.

Yep, this is how dumb I am. Didn't realize MLK day was Monday until after I posted that. I pounded plenty of shots for MLK last night, even if his birthday isn't till Mon.

how do you guys feel about "enjoy your holiday."? aka "happy _______ " (insert current/present-day holiday) " it is a federal holiday for which many people get free-time from work and/or school in the form of a 3-day weekend.

this is a much different statement than "i agree with this holiday's themes and principles and i am happy about them". so dont worry guys, its ok.
