Sounds standard. If you have no grounds to sue (discrimination) which it sounds like you don't I would take the cash. You should still get unemployment, you can in NY. Someone mentioned it but if there is a non compete clause you may want to strike it out (simply draw a line through it and write a notation by it). I imagine if there is one its barely enforceable or that your company would bother enforcing it, but you can't be to safe.

Im not a CA lawyer though (I am one in NY) so you might benefit from an employment specialist who is.

I would be careful of counter offering. In NY its a rejection of the original and they are NOT required to hold it open.

Thanks Boner. I was concerned about rejecting it and them not offering a new settlement.

Based on MB's comment above I think I will just take the severance but I will consult a lawyer before I sign just to get some detail on the situation.

Sorry to hear this, sam. I've worked in support during a lot of my career and there is always more outsourcing elsewhere all the time.

You might want to switch into professional services or account management types of roles. Tougher to outsource than support - and they pay more. Good luck!

Another thing to consider besides the severance pay is that determine if benefits (medical + dental) will also continue for a limited period of time. This way your not only looking at $$$ but also basic expenses which you would not have to incur.

Sorry, sami. Treat it as well-deserved time off. Treat yourself to a little vacation and live a little.

Don't even think about work for 8 weeks. Later, bro.

                    Collect cans, if u need a little walk-around $$.

I am surprised that you did not do your "you are a loser for working a 9-5 job" rant.

                        Samdapatriotsfan,

Here is a tip, start looking for IT jobs in higher education--private colleges, and land grant institutions but stay away from community colleges. You can make $100-130k per year without any concerns for losing your job. It is not silicon valley pay but then again, its slow and steady without any stress or layoffs.

Five words: Dynamite bomb strapped to chest. You fuking strap 20 sticks of dynamite around your back and chest. You should know what to do from there.
