I'm just damn tired of stadium-arena-pro sports welfare!
I live near the twin cities and they are trying to pass legislation to get a new outdoor stadium for each the Twins,Vikings and Gophers. The Timberwolves and Wild already got new arenas in the past few years. All of these arenas and stadiums will be supported by taxes. They even have to implement new taxes on fast food. Some little kid making $40 a week on his paper route that likes a Dairy Queen cone every couple days in the summer has to contribute money to Carl Pohlad,Ziggy Wilf and Glen Taylor's ''all billionaires''hobbies of owning a pro sports team.

I would have all the sympathy in the world for these owners if they put up all their own money to buy stadiums and arenas and ran the teams like a business with a proper balance sheet and at the end of the year they said they lost money because their taxes were too high.Maybe if these owners ran the teams like a business instead of paying a pitcher like Rojan Santana 15 million a year he would be paid the 5 million the free market would bear. Then of course after Santana made the 5 million he is worth I would feel sorry for him if he said his taxes were too high.

All of this subsidy welfare owners and players get makes other small businesses pay higher taxes. Then the city councils in these towns say that a new stadium brings in hundreds of million extra dollars into the city's coffers. If that's the case, why wouldn't the sales -entertainment taxes on hotel rooms, alcoholic beverages and fast food in the city go down?hehe!

Take a look at Dubya Bush when he owned the Texas Rangers.Him and his partners got the city to declare eminent domain on properties where the new stadium was to be located forcing private property owners out and then a sales tax was raised to build the stadium for them. Why don't you think the useless socialist democrats used that against him to make political hay with? It's because the democrats are the stadium welfare kings and queens doling out $$$$$$$$$$$$ to team owners. It means lots of work for their union thug constituents to build these public works projects and arenas.

In all of Wisconsin even 300 miles away from Green Bay they have an added sales tax that went to the refurbishing of Lambeau Field.Every mom and pop dry walling, carpet laying, cement pouring and painting private contractor pays the added tax everytime they eat lunch at ** Donalds. But no,they are not good enough to get a contract refurbishing Lambeau even though they may have put in the low bid on a job because the socialist democrat legislature said it's an all union project.Am I living in the formerly all communist state of the U.S.S.R here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!

America, the land of opportunity, the home of the free and the brave where everyone is awarded the chance to work hard and succeed.hehehehehe!Yup,that depends if you are privileged enough to be on Santa's ''the government's''good list where you get lots of toys and goodies for free even though you have been a very bad boy.

It's almost as bad as FEMA paying 75 grand each for those Katrina victim construction trailers that are worth 8K.Am I the only one here that realizes how socialism has really fu%$ed up this country where nothing is on the level or legitimate anymore?

Then pro sports is a joke when it comes to gambling and acting like it doesn't exist. If it weren't for gambling what sane person would give a rats ass care if steroid big baby Bonds hit a home run or not.You could finance stadiums with parlay cards in no time flat but major league sports wants nothing to do with that. Why should they when they get the money given to them for free. Then too,it wouldn't be fair that a team owner could pay for his hobbie with legalized betting while me as an avid boater couldn't fund my hobbie by selling parlay cards.Afterall,I bring in alot of money to bait and tackle shops, boat repair-dealers,gas stations-marinas etc.I'm sure the greedy overspending states wouldn't want to lose their ripoff lottery procedes being that parlays would put a dent into lottery ticket sales. The states need that lottery money to flush down the toilet paying crony bureacrats bloated salaries to be gifted with employment in useless makework jobs.God forbid the stae run Las Vegas odds parlays that would actually give the bettor a reasonable chance to win.I'm sure the states would say that the brainless idiots who play scratch offs and such with 50% takeouts are at a disadvantage when it comes to playing a very slight game of skill like handicapping teams to make parlay picks.

Welcome to the 21st century. Business owners in bed with local politicos seeking the advancement of eminent domain policies are hardly new. I don't like a lot of it myself, but why place ALL of the blame on people like Bush and the city council in Arlington, Texas?

Don't the voters bear some responsibility? If it was such a horrible, horrible thing that Bush did, why do the locals flock to the ballpark and the general area around the ballpark?

Personally, what Arlington did was far more appetizing to me than what other locales have done. The City of Arlington put it right out there in front: a sales tax increase, not a bunch of hidden tax increases like in Houston. And they were able to pay off the ballpark in expeditious fashion, thus saving tens of millions in interest.

If you don't want Minnesota tax dollars going to these projects and their greedy billionaire owners, then vote against them and vote against those in office who support them.

        Thanks for the suggestion.

I forgot to mention that what's wrong with team owners selling stock in a corporation to fund a stadium?I wonder if all the politicians in favor of building arenas and stadiums would put their money where their mouths are?Hmmmm, that great deal for the people having a stadium wouldn't sound so good if they had to trust their investment returning a dividend.

Wow,I sound like a grumpy old man here.hehe!I love baseball and like outdoor stadiums and I appreciate talented plays. Some players are nice, some dick heads and it's that way in life for every category of people so it's not like I have anything against players personally.I just don't think there should be a tax to support them and the owners.I hope they can make all the money they can and pay very low taxes on their earnings.I just think the whole pro sports subsidy welfare thing to artificially bloat and inflate salaries etc.is outrageous.

But I can see a team owner seeing everyone else in various industries getting welfare status so I suppose they feel entitled to welfare. It's a vicious circle where the more people get help, the more taxes go up and the more help they need to stay in business for paying too many taxes.

Brent, count me as a member in the 'grumpy old man club,' too. I agree with a lot of your comments, and don't take my defense of President Bush with regards to his affiliation with the Texas Rangers as me being an ardent admirer of the man. I voted for Bush one time for Texas governor because of the witch who preceded him in that office, but not once have I cast a ballot his direction for US President.
