And then I remember Super Nintendo came out, there was this crazy game called Populous, it was absolutely nuts you were fighting to build a civilization against other people and at the end of the game everyone in the world would go to the Center of the Earth and kill each other.

Not sure if this has been mentioned but Bubble Bobble was fun as hell and one of the few games I ever played on NES where you could co-op with a friend. In SMB3 you could only take turns or go head to head in that one mode, in Bubble Bobble you could actually play at the same time on the same team

edit: oh I guess Battletoads had co-op too? Never owned it or really got to play it but it looked cool
