    How the spread works
Hey guys first time poster here. I was wondering if you could tell me if I am correct in my understading of how the spread works.

Example is this weekends Iowa, Iowa State game

    Iowa -7
    Iowa State +7

I think Iowa is going to win by more than 7 so I place my bet on them. If they win by 8+ points then I win the bet correct?

If I am wrong please correct me and let me know how it actually works.

U are correct. Iowa needs to win by 8 or more for u to win your wager if u bet Iowa -7.

That being said. You might wanna give up now, it will save you money in the long run.

Good luck if u disregard my advice

Welcome Left Side. You have come to the right place!

Yes, you got it. If Iowa would win by 7 then the bet would be canceled as it is a tie with the spread. In your example, you can see why getting a half point off the 7 is very valuable. With many games landing on 3 and 7 (as in the favorite wins by 3 or 7) when the spread is 3 or 7, it is important to line shop and get the half point if it's available or buyable at a good price. -6.5 would make Iowa a winner and then +7.5 if you are betting IowaState.

correct. same as when you take a dog on a + number. if you take +7 and they lose by 8, you lose.

Thanks for the help guys! Last thing is if lets say Iowa somehow wins by 50 points or some huge number would I still win? Is there a point total where it stops or aslong as they win by 8 i win no matter what?

If Iowa wins a game by 50 or more, poster Fishhead will get a semi wood.

as long as they clear the - number, you win....period. if it lands right on the - number, you push and the bet is canceled and your wager is returned to you. if it lands on anything lower than the - number, you lose. same goes for the flip side taking a dog with a + number

Ok and instead of opening a new thread ill ask another question here. How does the money line work? On 5dimes it has:

                  Iowa-250
                  Iowa State+210

for the money line (ML for short), all said team you bet on has to do is win. score doesn't matter, just gotta win. hence why the price is higher for a ML then it is for a spread and total.

Money Line is just who is going to win outright.

Like blackbe said the team you bet on only has to win the game for you to win the wager.
Iowa @ -250 means you bet $250 to win $100
Iowa st @ +210 mean you bet $100 to win $210

Awesome thanks alot guys! So how all do you feel about the spread on the Iowa, Iowa State game? 5dimes will let me pick Iowa at -6.5 instead of -7 if I want. Im thinking about taking the -6.5. My winnings would change by 7 dollars

Oh I dont hammer Iowa I am a huge Hawkeye fan but this will be my first bet ever and im looking to keep it safe so thats why im thinking Iowa at -6.5 The reason is because I know how close this rivalry game can be some years.

jjgold needs to make a new video to explain the newbies what the spread is because apparently it's too complicated to figure out by itself.
