Fisher discovered his latent frustration when the USO caravan made its first stop, at Camp Monteith in Kosovo. Although Fisher was greeted warmly, the one-sided ratio of Steelers-to-Seahawks fans on the base rekindled memories of the Super Bowl crowd in Detroit.

The Steelers’ logo was painted on a hangar. Apache helicopter pilots from Pennsylvania posed for photos with Starks amid a chant of “Here we go, Steelers, here we go!”

    And so it went.

“You’d think half of western Pennsylvania is deployed over here,” Fisher said. “They wave their Terrible Towels and needle me as much as possible. Most of it’s good natured-fun, but ...”

To paraphrase fictional World War II casino owner Rick Blaine, the problems of the Seahawks don’t mean a hill of beans in this crazy world. But enough is enough.

Seventeen years after the fall of the Iron Curtain, Bryce Fisher dreams of the day when the Steel Curtain collapses, too.

“I heard lots of Pittsburgh fans jibber-jabbering about the NFC,” Fisher said. “I’ve seen how many other fans look at us and look at the game, and I’m more determined than ever to win.”

    ...

Meanwhile, the next time the Super Bowl veteran walks on to a base during a goodwill trip and mingles with troops waving Terrible Towels, he would dearly love to smile and pronounce a one-word retort.

    “Scoreboard!”
