OT: How losing 60 lbs has changed my life. My tips.
When I weighed 249 lbs at 5'11" I was ashamed and embarrassed often. Too often. I was born to eat. I love food and have been known to drink my fill and a little bit more.

If you were like me you know. Shoes with laces meant actually laying down on the floor and holding your breath in the fetal position to tie those puppies. Gatherings and meetings that were formal were a nightmare. Everyone but me would have their shirt tucked in. I didn’t even own a tuck-in shirt. What was the use? I could go on, like being in the "Big & Tall" cloths store in Asia desperately needing cloths and everything was too small. Or how about the airplane that was delayed 30 mins while the airline got a seat belt extender off another aircraft and on and on...

Then there were the failed diet years. For nearly 3 years I lost 25 lbs but gained back 16. In March of last year weighing 240 lbs I made the decision to quit the diet and change my lifestyle.

Today I weigh 189. I'm nearing my target weight of 182. My diet is simple because its not a diet but a lifestyle.

What’s nice about my new lifestyle is I can eat all I want and anything I want. But there is a catch (duh ). Like in gambling my lifestyle is to win everyday. Burn more than you take in.

Think about it. There is nothing simpler. If I know I'm going to be in an office all day or on a plane I will have 3 very small meals, and never snack. That day becomes a small win. If I know I'm going to a great steak house for dinner I will get some exercise during the day usually walking and have a small breakfast and a chicken salad or a turkey sandwich for lunch. So even though I chowed down a 16 oz prime rib that night I still get an overall win for the day.

One key to winning everyday is how to deal with snacks. I no longer keep any kind of munch food in the house. No chips, crackers or any thing similar. I buy fresh fruit already cut and mixed for in between snacks and that’s it. And if you think about it a slice of sweet watermelon beats a bag of greasy chips 7 days a week and twice on Sundays.

To be sure there was nothing magical about my 51 lbs of lost weight over 16 months. That’s only a loss of about 3 lbs a month. What is cool about it is anyone can do it.

      Still, easier said than done.

I'm Italian so we love to eat as well and mostly unhealthy stuff. Eating in is probably just as bad as ordering out. I know I can shed lbs when I want to but staying on the wagon is difficult.

Wow....Congrats John. Good read.....I love my Carlsberg, and that's my biggest potential weight gainer. I hit the weights and try to get out and jog every other day, so the "Battle of the Bulge" is pretty much a stalemate on my end thus far, though the forces of evil are making progress on the flanks of late. I'll keep battling though, as I imagine I'll give up the beer the day I get my permanent residence 6 feet under.....

It actually has hurt my game. My timing and balance is off. I'm thinking we need to re look at those strokes or at least have a way to adjust. I'm life & death to break 90 these days. I'm fading the ball and when I stregthen my grip just a little it turns into a low pull. Maybe 6 strokes a side? Thats just a stroke and a half more per side. We can adjust at the turn.

that's really weird. you were 5'11, 249 lbs. and you couldn't bend down to tie your shoes. that is not that fattening. i am 5'9, 235.. i'm shorter than you, and only 14 lbs less. BUT, i play full court basketball 2 times a week, i play in ball hockey tournaments, (full sized rink, running), i go benched 325 lbs..(not anymore), but did when i trained seriously at same weight. AND, i can bend down easily to tie my shoes in 2.2 seconds. and you saw me, i'm a fat fukk, as richie said.

I have tried every freakin diet in the world, and NONE work for me. The only way i ever lose weight is when i'm active. I eat 1800 cals a day now, and all i do is gain gain gain. Last summer, i was so active.. never stayed home, always out.. walking, going to malls, playing sports. and i ate like a pig, and was 20 lbs less than i am now.

the key is ACTIVITY.. move around. i stay home on computer all f-ckin day.. it's killing me. i am not burning any calories. my metabolism is slow as hell. Like you said, you can eat like a pig, but if you move around all day and never sit still, you will be ok.

              THAT'S THE TRICK

get 2 lessons with a reasonable decent instructor or gold pro that actually knows how to teach, and he will correct your swing.

I'm 265 atm and its hard. I'm so small boned and skinny its all in my gut. The good news is the crunches and 1.5 hours a day on the treadmill bike should take care of that. I was going to work out for new years and etc, but I have a infection that was very dangerous etc for the past 6 months. Only recently have I gotten the go ahead to work out strenously etc...

                    WTG John.

I've been going through almost the exact same thing. I think my maximum weight was right around 250 several years ago. I'm also 5'11".

Two years ago, I decided to do something about it and went from 240 lbs down to 180 lbs in 8 months. Then I gained 25 back over that winter, lost it again during last summer, actually getting down to 175.

But last winter was rough on me, I got back up to almost 220. Now this summer, I figure it'll just go off on it's own because I'm fairly active. Unfortunately, I probably consume way too many calories. I'm still hovering in the 210-215 range. I know I've gotta go back to counting calories if I want to lose the weight, but I just can't get into the mindset right now.

Moral of the story, it's one thing to lose the weight, but keeping it off is a constant battle. It does take a permanent lifestyle change, and that's a choice that many of us just can't make.

red meat is not a problem really, It's the processed foods Americans love to eat. That shit will ruin you.

Exactly. The meditteranean diet has lots of red fatty meat but is working because the food is not frozen or processed.

Pizzas, hamburgers, fried chicken and fries will kill you. This is what the health insurance companies want to make more profit. More heart attacks and strokes.
