Going to recycle my pennies for money

I got 19 garbage bags of pennies

don't ask why/how I have that many pennies

going to drive down and recycle them as copper

is this possible? Will they take it? Is it against the law to recycle pennies/money?

You cannot recycle a US copper penny as only the mint is legally allowed to melt the currency. It is a Federal offense to melt any US currency for sale despite the copper penny being worth less than it's face value. The Federal mint is losing money on every copper penny it mints and keeps in circulation today, which is one of the strongest reasons for ending it's circulation.

In most states pennies are an exception to currency defacement laws which is why you can have them stretched out and stamped into novelty images at touristy places.

pre-1982 pennies are 95% copper and are "worth" 2.7 cents each. i say "worth" because it's illegal to melt US pennies.

if you really have 19 bags worth, and are a little OCD, you could start sorting the coppers from the zinc (1982-now, technically '82 was a crossover year and probably 70% of '82s are copper but it's easier to just say pre/post '82) and sell the coppers on ebay. they usually go for about 2 cents each.

i probably have about 500 pounds of copper pennies in 5 gallon buckets in my basement. lol. i kinda fell off the wagon, but i was getting multiple $25 boxes from the bank and sorting every night there for a while..

You don't have to roll them. The bank has machines that do that automatically.

Better off getting cash from a bank. IMHO
Gift cards are too limiting...give and get cash/checks.

on a one-off deposit, sure, obviously take it to a bank.

but if you're sorting them, they tend to get annoyed rather quickly when you're bringing in lots of zinc pennies on a weekly basis.
