    U.S. Open
Tiger Woods hasn't even played a full round of golf since coming off left knee surgery. Depite that, the oddsmakers have him a +150 favorite to win the U.S. Open. I actually think Tiger may miss the cut. Putting money on Woods this week is a bad idea. With that being said, who do you guys think will win this weekend?

He says he will be 100% for the open, I wouldn't be surprised if he wins.

Even if he is indeed 100% healthy you know he will be extremely rusrty. I'll take my chances with the field.

Tiger Woods a heavy favorite at U.S. Open

Out of action for two months following knee surgery, Tiger Woods makes his return to the PGA Tour this week just in time for one of golf's biggest prizes, the U.S. Open. Adding to the excitement of Tiger's return is his pairing with Phil Mickelson for the first two rounds on Thursday and Friday. Top that off with the famous South Course at Torrey Pines as the site, and the ingredients are there for one great tourney.

He says he’s ready. The betting public agrees.

Tiger Woods is in his familiar spot as the runaway favorite on the PGA Tour. He’s getting 6-5 betting odds for this week’s 108th edition of the U.S. Open; longtime rival Phil Mickelson is the second favorite at 8-1, followed by Jim Furyk at 15-1. Reigning champion Angel Cabrera is a 40-1 shot.

Woods is getting the benefit of the doubt after missing two months of golf to have his left knee scoped. It’s the third time Woods has had surgery on that knee, so this is nothing new for the No. 1 golfer in the world. Torrey Pines is also old hat to Tiger; he already has a win there this year at the Buick Invitational. Another victory this weekend would give Woods his third U.S. Open title.

However, Woods hasn’t taken top prize at this event since 2002. It’s been longer shots like Cabrera winning the U.S. Open, following in the footsteps of Michael Campbell in 2005 and Geoff Ogilvy in 2006. Ogilvy is in the middle of the pack this year at 25-1. He’s also in fourth place on the money list with a win at the CA Championship in March. Ogilvy has the credentials to be a strong value pick for those handicappers trawling for value among the “medium” shots.

You might find even more betting value closer to the top of the odds list. Mickelson lives about 15 minutes away from Torrey Pines in San Diego; this was his golf course in high school, and he has three lifetime PGA Tour victories there. Mickelson has reportedly been practicing diligently at Torrey Pines for this week’s event. “Lefty” has won three major tournaments in the past four years, but has yet to win the U.S. Open. A win on Sunday would erase the sting of his 2006 meltdown at Winged Foot – his fourth runner-up finish at the Open.

Much of Mickelson’s experience at Torrey Pines was rendered moot when the South course was overhauled in 2001. But the persistent lengthening of these major events plays right into Lefty’s hands. Mickelson is a long hitter, and Torrey Pines will be par 71 at 7,541 yards this week (some reports say 7,643 yards), nearly 400 yards longer than ever before.

Of course, Woods is also known for his long drives, and Ogilvy is no slouch off the tee – although he’s a little short this year at 283.6 yards per drive compared to 295.3 yards in 2007. Length and accuracy rarely go together; this week, the stress is definitely on the former. The primary cut of rough was reportedly measured at 2.5 inches, down from three inches last year at Oakmont and four inches at Winged Foot.

The combination of long fairways and more forgiving rough is going to make it incredibly tough for someone with a short, accurate drive like Zach Johnson (50-1) to win at Torrey Pines. The biggest hitter on the Tour to get his own name on the odds list is Adam Scott at 25-1; this rising star is eighth on the PGA Tour with an average drive of 299.8 yards. He’s also playing with a broken right pinky, according to The Golf Channel. Top driver Bubba Watson (312.3 yards) is part of the field at a very short 4-1.

There are currently 156 players scheduled to tee off. ESPN and NBC have split coverage of the first two rounds starting Thursday at 1:00 p.m. Eastern. The Peacock takes over the airwaves for the final two rounds.

There's a ton of money pouring in on Phil right now (+485 The Greek) I am looking at Adam Scott, Justin Rose or Geoff Ogilvy right now. Anthony Kim @ +7000 also has some value. Who do you like?

The only thing that bugs me about Adam Scott is how he will fare being paired with Tiger and Lefty those first two rounds. He's certainly seen the media and gallery circus around Woods, but this could be a full-blown goat rodeo with Woods and Mickelson playing together.

I'm going to wait and see what Brian Gabrielle has to say about the tournament. Hope to see at least his three free picks sometime this afternoon and will get them posted up on SBRforum.com and in here as soon as I do.

This is the best play I found:

Will T. Woods Win US Open?

                  Yes +320
                  No -350

                  I also like this bet:

                  T. Woods vs S. Garcia:

                  T. Woods -260
                  S. Garcia +240

Hottest player on the European tour in recent weeks playing in the U.S. Open is Robert Karlsson of Sweden, who's been murdering the pitch and putt courses on the other side of the pond (top 5 finish in the last 4 tournaments he's entered).

Probably the last type of bet I'd make in a tourny of this magnitude is for the outright winner, when there are so many other types of wagers.

There's the much more realistic top 5 finisher or top 10 finisher, there's the regional tournaments within the main tournament (top European, top South African, top Australian, etc), there's tournament matchbets, there's individual round matchbets, there's making the cut prop, a ton of props like winning margin, hole in one, low round, on and on an on. To bet the winner is such a needle in a haystack proposition (like anyone would have figured Angel Cabrera, Geoff Ogilvy, or Michael Campbell the last 3 years).

                        Finishing Position

To refresh your memory, the last time Tiger Woods was coming off an injury he missed the cut at Wingfoot....
Tiger Woods has no shot at the win this weekend, this is also the reason why Phil, Sergio, and others behind him in the odds are dropping so fast. I found the best wager for the weekend. Be smart and drill this one...

                        Finishing Position

                        Tiger Woods over 3.5 (-125) (5*)

                        Source: BetGameDay and CaribSports

                        I Also Like:

                        Under 20.5 (-115) (3*)
                        Sergio Garcia

                        Under 9.5 (-125) (2*)
                        Phil Mickelson

I love playing this type of wager in Majors, Its the only way I wager golf. I do well at them, unlike win tickets and match-ups...

Just Compare this Wager type to my plays, it clearly shows These are strong plays I listed.

Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson lead US Open field

                                                  By: Brian Gabrielle | bgsports.com

It's been a while since any tournament has drawn this much press before the first tee shot, even a major like this week's U.S. Open at Torrey Pines' South Course.

Despite every sound reason offered for why Phil Mickelson will win the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines this week, I can’t pick him. I can’t do it.

Home course. Playing well lately. Huge fan support, which he loves. Always in the mix in U.S. Opens. Long hitter on longest U.S. Open layout ever. Sight lines.

Oh, the much talked about sight lines. When did this phrase take over the golf dialogue? OK, it’s important to see the field, but enough with the sight lines. Baseball’s overused technical term of inflated importance is 'arm slot.' What did pitchers do before they knew they had an arm slot? They threw the ball, often for strikes.

I can’t pick him because I had a little chit-chat with the Lord some years ago, vis. picking Mickelson. We made a deal. No Mickelson.

It’s going to be a circus, the Mickelson-Woods pairing. Nobody cares about Adam Scott in this threesome. It’s like the Larry Bird-Magic Johnson ’81 Topps rookie card, where Dr. J occupies the middle third of the famous perforated card, as Scoring Leader. All due respect to the good doctor, but that card goes for a thousand bucks because of the greatest point guard of all time on one end and the greatest passing forward of all time on the other.

Mickelson, of course, is his own circus. He doesn’t need the extra motivation to go bonehead. In fact, I’m looking at this dream pairing and all the hype about it and thinking we could have a mild canceling-out factor, leaving the Ogilvy's and the Goosen's to quietly go about their pars. And the Scott's.

One thing seems pretty clear going into this week’s second major of ’08: the short hitters don’t stand much of a chance.

Torrey Pines is rigged for more than 7,600 yards, though officials are saying they’ll keep it in the 7,400 - 7,500 range. The sixth hole is a Par 4 at 515 yards. Corey Pavin can’t handle that. By Saturday, having missed the cut with a score of something like 15-over, he’ll be singing 'Dust in the Wind' on a beach in La Jolla.

The Par 5 13th has gone from 541 to 614. It takes a drive of 250 just to clear low-lying scrub that runs from the tee box to the start of the fairway. If a gust comes up from the wrong direction, Pavin, whose average drive is 263 yards, shortest on Tour, won’t be able to reach the fairway.

                                                  Now that’s just rude.

At this week’s U.S. Open, take Brandt Snedeker. Just kidding. But he’s intriguing. It was at the Buick last year that he broke onto the scene, finishing third but hanging with Tiger until the end. And he made it most of the way at Augusta in impressive fashion.Intriguing but I’m not going there.

Take Adam Scott (40-1), 1/6 unit: Scott’s never played a professional tournament at Torrey Pines (and I don’t know if he’s ever played there at all prior to this week’s practice rounds). That may be to his advantage.

It’s a home course for Tiger and Phil and they own the place, with nine wins in the Buick Invitational between them. But sight line advantage or not, this is going to be a different course than the soggy one in January.

Scott has missed more cuts than he’s made in his U.S. Opens. Like I said, though, I like him slotted between the Mickelson and Woods on Thursday and Friday. I also have to figure the laid back Aussie will dig San Diego. He’s done well in So Cal in the past, with an unofficial win at the Nissan Open a few years back.

Take Vijay Singh (33-1), 1/6 unit: It’s like he died. I don’t understand it – he’s made $2.3 million this year with a bunch of strong tournaments and he’s eighth in FedEx Cup points. For a guy who struggles with accuracy off the tee, he’s done very well in U.S.Opens over the years. Talk about flying under the radar this week.

Take Stephen Ames (50-1), 1/6 unit: Ames suffers in the distance department and he also has a mediocre record at Torrey Pines. But you have to like the way he’s playing lately (5, 4 and T13 in his last three tourneys, the fifth place coming at The Players which played especially tough this year).

And a mid-range driver (in terms of distance – he hits it about 280) might not suffer a case of the run-outs this week, depending on how fast the fairways are.
