49 Year Old Julio Franco Finally Retires
I remember watching him play when he was a rookie back in 1982. You can't help to admire this guys accomplishments 3 decades of playing in the big leagues. I was really hoping to see him playing for some team when he was 50 too.

    Julio Franco retires

Mexico City (Sports Network) - Julio Franco has finally retired.

The 49-year-old infielder announced his retirement earlier this week, officially ending his bid to play professional baseball into his 50's. Franco's career spanned 23 years in the major leagues, and included stops in his native Dominican Republic, Korea, Japan, and finally, Mexico.

Franco announced his retirement to his Mexican league team, the Quintana Roo Tigers, earlier this week, and the league posted the news on its website.

The ageless wonder's major league career ended last season when he was designated for assignment by the Mets after compiling a .200 batting average, one home run and eight runs batted in with 50 at-bats. His home run made him the oldest player in major league history to hit a long ball. This came on the heels of a decent 2006 season when Franco, then 47, batted .273 with two homers and 26 RBI for the Mets.

The native of San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic broke into the majors in 1982, and is a three-time All-Star and a career .298 hitter with 173 home runs, 1,194 RBI, and 2,586 hits with Philadelphia, Cleveland, Texas, the Mets, Chicago White Sox, Milwaukee, Tampa Bay and Atlanta.
