OT - Anti Virus Program Cause Problems?
Got three pcs in the house right now: an old desktop, Win 98, that worked fine (if something is still ususable for your purposes it's not obsolete) until a year ago when I installed a "free" antivirus program from my DSL provider. Evn uninstalled, it stalls at some links.

Gonna try to take it back to "out of the box" and lose all the old files, who cares. I think that's done thru the F12 key?

A Dell, 2.5 years old, that got corrupted. Even with Norton antivirus standing watch. Problem with the AV programs, one guy told me, is that if you don't turn 'em off when you install new soft or hardware they can cause probs.

And was using the gfs 4 month old Toshiba laptop, until today.
Well, still using it but has a problem (from the get-go) with the screen constantly reverting to half-screen, when clicking some links and particurlarly with scrolling. (Restore don't work and neither does going to higher resolution. I'm typing this on a half screen on the laptop, about 8" x 7". It goes out tomorrow to Toshiba repair under the warranty)

This is not a prob caused by the AV program, and it is hardware not software, but cripes . . .

What garbage Gates makes. Shoulda woulds coulda got Apple, like a friend did almost 5 years ago and zero problem from then to now,

A guy who I used to know was very good at pc repair.

He suggested NOT using or installing any AV program, as they take up a lot of space and will definitely slow down your system,

He also said that unless you take the time to "update the definitions" about once every week or two, they will become useless. (How many people do that.)

This guy, who owned a pc repair in LA, said it's best not to put in any AV program, AND STAY OUT OF BAD ONLINE NEIGHBORHOODS.

Just like you stay out of bad real world neighborhoods. Don't go to porn sites and you'll be OK.

After these two neg experiences I think he was right.
