there is something very strange about american racing
look at ireland, they race for smaller purses but have massive fields, over 20 horses in most races
something wrong with the economics
american horses are sought abroad by many racing jurisdictions
maybe a tax credit for race horse owners, reductions of take outs, allow exchanges
this industry can thrive, it does elsewhere
jj does not like racing, it requires too much thought and strategy, he likes flipping a coin

Track executives and state racing boards wrongly assume that larger takeouts mean more money for them. They'll never understand what entices people to push more money through the betting windows.

The internet has helped bury the industry. Most tracks are like ghost towns nowadays because of it.The lost revenue from parking, admission and food/beverage sales hurts the track owners in the long run.Md. racing will be dead in the next couple of years, what a shame.

internet has not killed in other racing jurisdictions, over 60k attend race meetings in japan every weekend, of course you can bet on the net there, same in hong kong, singapore , australia
imagine this, that the nyra only raced on weekends
full fields , every race, nice dividends, better product
do they have the balls to do it?

I'm just going by what I see WTF.Back in the 60's and 70's you couldn't find a place at the rail, now you have basically the whole track to yourself. That is a shitload of $ they are losing.Hope there is a fix because there is no better sport out there in my mind.

I do think that the ones that have casinos are doing much better it seems. Look at Gulfstream Park. They actually got smart there and has a ten cent pick six. The handle there is doing better because of that.

Yeah the "Racinos" seem to have higher purses than the tracks that are in juridictions that do allow slot machines at their tracks. Although the few times that I have been to a "Racino" in New Mexico mostly old women playing slot or video poker and they view the horse racing as a distraction to their machine.

Small fields, high takeout, too many drug trainers winning over 30%, more competition for the gambling dollar. Great sport which unfortunately has been going downhill for years. In order to have a chance to survive, must change their thinking and use Europe and Japan as guidelines.

Racing in New York and California are on life support....the industry is truly in a death spiral. When you watch racing at Santa Anita or Hollywood Park there are 6 horse or less fields, and New York about the same. The NYRA was given a cash infusion so they could race at Aqueduct and the Meadowlands beginning this month. Horse fans want to say the racing industry is fine...but realists will tell you if something isn't done very soon, the sport will only exist in a very few states and landmark tracks such as Hollywood Park, Belmont, Santa Anita, and others will close.
