It's not an "anti-drug" movie. It's a movie about addictions and how they conquer the human spirit. I think it's illustrated best by Ellen Burstyn's character - addicted to her to TV and to the fantasies it inspires in her head. There is also a "love" theme in the movie, but unusual in that it explores what happens when love goes wrong, or maybe when addiction conquers love (a subset of the "human spirit").
