I had a friend who recently had a stroke. He's 35 and diabetic. While I wasn't there when it occured others were. This got e mailed to me today. I thought I should share with everyone since every minute counts. I know because I visited him in the hospital today and his left side was paralyzed by the stroke but has been recovering.
With the recent incident of one of our own, this email came to me this morning that I thought would be a great notice for us all. It's just too bad it came a week later, but hopefully next time, we'll all know what to do about it.
RECOGNIZING THE BEGINNING OF A STROKE:
S * Ask the individual to SMILE.
T * Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently)
(i.e. It is sunny out today)
R * Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.
NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out his tongue.. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other , that is also an indication of a stroke.
If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call 911 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.
A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this e-mail sends it to 10 people; you can bet that at least one life will be saved.
Early detection of a stroke (up to 3hrs) may enable medical staff to completely overcome the effects of a stroke. Time is crucial in recognition of stroke along with prompt medical attention.
