eBay -- End of an Online Era, Life Goes On
eBay was one of the Internet's great feelgood success stories.

Back in the mid-90s, when the world and and the Net were young, a computer nerd set up a bid site to help his girlfriend in her pez collecting hobby. And it went from there. The proverbial idea whose time had come.

Recently, the online sales world and financial papers has been abuzz about the new direction eBay is taking.

It seems their new poliicies are designed, in result if not in purpose, to shed the small "yard sale" sellers in favor of the giants, and the mass large scale sellers, pedding a lot of junk from China.

Now, ebay has made a deal with General Motors to list every used car they have on all their lots nationwide. And I understand are looking to make such deals with other major corporations.

As some disgruntled smaller sellers are saying, ebay wants to become an online Walmart. And are leaving the site in some numbers.

Hey, it's their site. I sell part time on ebay, small stuff, collectibles. When I've time. If I don't have ebay it'll be harder, but not a disaster. But for some of these people, supplementing a social security check or helping with the mortgage, it's a disaster.

And thousands of these small sellers are decaring a week long "strike" or boycott, starting Feb 18.

I'll pass on the strike. Ebay can do with their site want they want. If their is an online opputrunity for some entrepreneurs to replace the "old" ebay, it'll happen. In not, que sera sera.

(There are actually a number of small ebay wannabees, but they don't have the money to do the ads and promotions necessary to make their names household.)
