#3(CNN) -- A shark attack Friday killed a 20-year-old man off a beach on Vandenberg Air Force Base, said the Santa Barbara County, California, Fire Department.
Surf Beach is one of three that sits on the coastal air base, and the military closed all three beaches at 9:46 a.m. Pacific (12:46 p.m. ET), shortly after the shark attack, an air base spokesman said.
The three beaches will remain closed for 72 hours, the spokesman said.
Surf Beach is open to the public, but the other two -- Wall and Minuteman Beaches -- are open to base personnel only, the spokesman said.
A coroner was on the scene about noon Pacific, the spokesman said.Comment -

One morning the tide pulled me out from shore a good 300 - 400 feet. I'm treading water when all of a sudden something big bangs into my waist and mid section. It pushes me a few feet. Imagine my horror when a fin pops up right in front of me. The pacific is murky and the visibility is horrible. If I could run on top of water I would have done a JChrist right then. The fin turns and comes right at me and it was a huge dolphin. He got up in my face and I think he was trying to play with me. He had patches on his skin and seemed menacing and powerful in the water. I quickly swam back to shore as I was close to a heart attack with my heart beating so fast.
A few minutes later a bunch of dolphins (like 5 or 6) all started playing right in front of my house. They were surfing, jumping, etc. for about 20 minutes. I grabbed my camera and caught the action. It was pretty neat but I kept thinking that as quick as a dolphin came up on me, it could have been a shark just as easy. I've never swam too far out after that.
A couple of years ago, I was in New Smyrna beach in Florida with my wife and we were watching guys surf as we were about to go in the water. We started seeing fins surfing right along with the surfers and I asked a guy what was it and he said sharks. Sure enough, dozens of sharks were in the water and some looked like they were trying to nip at the surf boards. Come to find out that New Smyrna is the shark bite capital of the world. There's more attacks at that one beach then all other beaches combined. Crazy...Comment -

#17I use to have a condo right on the beach in Marina Del Rey and I use to go out for a swim every morning about 6am. The Pacific ocean is cold as shit by the way.
