I was up in Los Angeles for a concert (Jonsi). I decided to grab some dinner at the Chinese place I used to go to all the time when I lived in LA. The restaurant is in a strip mall and there's only about a dozen parking spaces so it's always difficult to find parking. I was sitting idle in the lot waiting for someone to leave. I see some guy leaving. I quickly backed up to take his space. Before I know it, I make contact with a green, Honda Civic. I can swear I looked behind my shoulder before backing up but I just did not see the car. It was night and I don't think the guy had his headlights on. In addition, the parking lot was poorly lit. What should I tell my insurance company when they call me for my side of the story? I don't feel guilty about what happened. This is the first accident I've been involved in many years. How much can I expect my insurance premiums to go up by?

#3No cops on the scene. I gave the guy my insurance info and contact info. There was damage to his car but no damage to mine. Should I just tell my insurance company he rear ended me?Comment -

#4I wouldn't lie if it was me. The accident was your fault, own up to it. What if that was you the guy backed up into to? The insurance companies don't need a police report to decide anyway. You can have a police report saying one thing and the insurance company can rule anyway they see fit.
How much damage is it? I'd have the guy get a couple of estimates and then is possible pay him yourslef.Comment -

#8Yeah I would try to deal with the guy directly in cash first. Then resort to insurance last.Comment -

#9If you have good insurance file a claim and get them to pay for it. Your rate might not even go up. They take frequency and payout amount into account....If you have very basic insurace with a small company they might raise your rate. In which case, out of pocket might be the way to go. You can always call and ask how that works with your particular company.Comment -

#20i agree with the consensus here, no reason to lie
if the insurance company finds out you lied, they can disallow the claim - then your dumb lie could cost you $100,000 if the other guy has a twisted neckComment -

#21Integrity....doing what's right even when nobody else is looking
or be an asshole and make the other guy pay for what he didn't cause.....meaning it'll come back around to you in the future and don't bitch when the shoe is on the other foot.
easy choice...Comment
