Skins down to two choices: Spagnuolo, Fassel

    Thursday, February 7, 2008; Page E06

New York Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo and Washington Redskins management continued to discuss the team's head coaching vacancy last night, his second day of meetings with owner Daniel Snyder. Spagnuolo spent Tuesday night and all of yesterday with Snyder and Vinny Cerrato, the executive vice president-football operations, and is a strong contender for the job, sources said.

Jim Fassel, who nearly was hired two weeks ago, also is a finalist and was awaiting word from the team on a decision. League sources said that Fassel, former San Francisco 49ers and Detroit Lions coach Steve Mariucci and Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator Ron Meeks anticipated that Snyder could contact them late last night with his decision as well, with the process winding down a month after Joe Gibbs resigned. As of 1 a.m. today, those candidates had not heard from the Redskins, league sources said.

Fassel remained hopeful and believed that he and Spagnuolo were the leading candidates, league sources said, while sources close to Spagnuolo said the coach, who led New York's defense in its Super Bowl victory over the New England Patriots, was enthused about his sessions with the team. League sources said Meeks and Mariucci were less optimistic about their chances and sensed the decision likely would come down to Fassel or Spagnuolo.

The Redskins have most of their coaching staff in place and selected new offensive and defensive coordinators before a head coach, an unusual situation but not a deterrent to the final candidates. The Giants do not want to lose Spagnuolo and were working on a counter-proposal to enhance his contract with them, league sources said.

Redskins Note: The Redskins began creating salary cap space by renegotiating the contracts of guard Randy Thomas and defensive end Andre Carter, league sources said. The team entered the offseason $20 million over the 2008 salary cap and could restructure 12 ore more contracts.

I have a feeling it will be Fassel even though I think it is a bad choice

they had him in for 4 interviews and one was a 10 hour session. snyder has worked with the guy for 4 years and he still felt the need to do all of that? this guy just loves the attention. i bet people beat the snot out of him in hs and now hes just a cock sucking jackass with little man syndrome.

either that or Williams is a terrible interview but the Vikings wanted williams before Childress and then snyder paid Williams big bucks to stay in washington presuming he would take gibbs spot someday
so he never even interviewd with vikings

yeah but he why would you need to interview a guy for so many hours if you've worked with him for 4 years? not to mention the fact that snyder met with pete carroll for like 9 hours.

Scratch off Spagnuolo. New York just resigned him for 3 years at $2 million per year.

Greg williams has done nothing to earn a Head coach job.. Fassel did a half way decent job with the Giants.

Snyder is an idiot. He's still trying to beat Jones as the worst owner in the NFL. That's a tough task with guys like Al Davis still stumbling around. Gregg Williams shoulda been handed carte blanch after Gibbs stepped down.

this is completely ridiculous. we got him in to work with JC, now he wont have the time to work with JC. he hasnt even proven he can call plays, much less run the show. this is ridiculous, being skins fan is embarrassing. as i said before, one of the worst 3 franchises in the NFL in terms of how the football operations are run.
