Alex Smith is not good, but the play calling the last 2 years has been less than piss poor. They have the worst offense in the league and it's not because of talent. It's horrible coaching and it's not even all on the OC, some of the "be conservative" orders are coming down from Mount Singeltary.
During the 2 min warning the 49ers were moving the ball and they said that the 49ers seem to do alright when Alex Smith calls his own plays... but seems to struggle when the coach calls them.

The head coach tells the OC to run a conservative predictable offense, and his CUZ calling the plays does that. It's a lose/lose relationship.

First of all Alex Smith is NOT a #1 QB. He is a high end #2 at best....sort of reminds me of Mike Pelfrey for the Mets.
Shows flashes of brilliance from time to time, has all the physical tools, but just can't seem to put it together consistently for a whole year.
Secondly, Mike Singletary is a moron. He is committed to wanting to win but just not that saavy at X's and O's (which are what really counts). I knew he wasn't going to be that effective the first day I saw him on TV with a Jesus cross hanging from his neck. Religion isn't gonna draw up plays for you nor scout you the right talent. This man believes pastoring will make him effective on the gridiron.
Look at coaches like Belichick and Bill Walsh....it was all about talent evaluating and smart play calling with them. Singletary is just the opposite....nothing more than a hype man - disciplinarian.Comment -
